Well, you haven't mentioned carriers in your posting ;) Using feedback has the advantage that the amount off harmonics is dependend on the Operator level therefore it's working much better for for sweeps than a static waveform. Another way creating distorted Sounds is using a carrier at fixed frequency 0Hz (or a bit more when you want to add a slight "modulation" to the sound) as waveshaper, what works for DX7 and VZ as well.
