It's generally a very bad idea but I think it doesn't usually result in damage. It's definately possible, for instance, to kill a PCI card by removing it while it's on (though I've even intentionally done things like that and ever seen any damage result from it) but I don't know if that would apply to ROM cards. There's probably a reset procedure detailed in the manual. Or in the service manual. I don't really have the time to check right now. Can you give any more details (well if you fix the problem it's kind of irrelevant..)? Is the display showing anything? can patches be changed (at least visually, on the display), are LEDs illuminating normally, etc?
