Well, the Yamaha FM implementation isn't realy FM it's Phase Modulation and Phase Distortion is basicly Phase Modulation too. The best guess is that Casio uses a sine shaper as carrier since the function fits perfectly to the description Casio gives in the CZ-Series manuals. A sine shaper is basicly a special version of an FM Carrier tuned down to 0Hz (FS1R, TG77 and various FM softsynths can do that) but Casio probably haven't used a sine as modulator but something what is able to do some waveform symmetry stuff, maybe comparable to the G2 shape oscillator, it at least sound pretty similar when using it at a Phase Oscillator tuned down to 0Hz... > There are 8 stage envelopes, unlike analog which is 4, but you can > always use only 4 stages on the CZ to make it exactly like having analog > envelopes if you want.
