The early CT and MT series used static waveforms (as described below) with an amplitude envelope. Each voice (the keyboards tended to be 8-voice instruments) had two different waveforms, each with its own envelope. This allowed more interesting sounds to be produced. Later models even featured detuned waveforms and repeating envelopes. The 1000P and its ilk used additive synthesis which produced a more organ-like (and boring) sound than the earlier models.

As I understand it, it's not really samples or analog- just very primitive
16-step digital waveforms. They're played at a high sample rate so there's
no audible aliasing. But obviously they're not very pure waveforms- the
triangle wave on the HT series has a lot of overtones so it really doesn't
sound much like a triangle wave. I think it sounds really good this way.
Also there's some kind of waveform crossfading (as you can hear on the
MT-68's "cosmic tone" sound, for example) but this isn't editable in the HT
  series.

I think most Casio models (except MT-70, MT-35, CZ, VL, PT, etc.) used this
until the sample-based stuff came out.
