There are several free or cheap phase distortion VSTs and hybrids on the KVR Audio website. They are certainly easier to program than a CZ. The only trouble is that you always need to have your computer nearby.

I don't do much design with Phase Distortion these days, but if I were to
and my CZ was gone, I'd look to some software I know is out there that does
this. I wouldn't try to substitute PD with any other form, it just isn't
similar enough.
