So, when you play the built-in demo on the DM5, it is 'quiet' too?  I'm guessing it's the Alesis DM5 drum machine you are talking about.  It's a drum module, so a note-off message makes sense.  I'd look at its volume settings and how you are amplifying it.  A soft drum-machine just doesn't 'sound' right to me.  You know this is designed to be used with an electronic drum kit, right?  Maybe it's a MIDI velocity setting that's in need of adjustment.  I don't have one, so I'm just throwing out ideas here.  ---Charles J
