Subject: [CZsynth] Good ol' FZ-1/10/20 disk drive issues

Owning a couple of CZ's and a few FZ's already, swore I belonged to this group already. Guess not, so first post ...

Recently, I picked up another cheap FZ-20 in the hopes that this one had a working disk drive. No dice. That makes 2 FZ-20's and an FZ-10 (and an FZ-1 before that, RIP), all sitting in storage collecting dust.

It's cool that butchy.com has the drive specifics listed, but while appreciated, the directions are obtuse and near-impossible to follow. The most recent post about it here was a year ago, when Joaquim seemed to have some success converting a non-Shugart drive: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CZsynth/message/3551 . Unfortunately, I can't determine if he ever posted those directions / pictures.

The most recent and interesting finding on the web was from earlier this year, discussing Shugart-friendly emulators: http://www.vintagesynth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=45592 Again, a lot of talk, but no one really seemed to put it into actual play.

I guarantee I'm not alone in this ... in fact, I'd wager easily over half FZ's out there now have dead and/or useless drives. So, I'm guessing at this point, my best luck would be to buying a standard 3.5" drive and building the conversion cable. Has anyone here done this successfully, and are willing to help? Huge, huge appreciation here if so.
