I usually don't use the chorus precisely because it adds more noise ... (totally useless feature) The fader stays permanently down. However, there's still background hiss in the output. I have never noticed any additional improvement by turning "Chorus" off in the menu, but I'll try it again just to see.  

I can use a gate, but even better than using a gate is to have a q uiet instrument & signal path. That's why I was wondering about hardware mods.
