I did the same thing with my cz101 - a 9v battery in the compartment. it works

There is no internal battery.  You have to keep batteries in the battery
compartment to hold the patches.  It's a stupid design.

I modded my cz101 to have a single 9v instead of 6 C batteries just to hold
the patches, since I never run it off batteries anyway.
