This is a rather fallacious argument, actually. It's not that we're
afraid that wouldn't be able to make good music with any gear -
before I the band was formed, I was an active tracker, doing great
80's stuff with lots of NordLead samples (having no clue what a
NordLead is). It's just that we all think that 80's and 70's gear is
infinitely cooler than the new stuff. It looks better for one thing,
and it's cheaper, as well.

One could argue that a NordLead (I'm using it as an example because
it's just about the only modern synth I know well enough) or
something comparable would in the end be cheaper than all the old
stuff it would effectively replace, but then again we can't say that
we did the entire album with only one synth, now can we.

Another thing that we're about is totally artificial sounds - making
bass that can't possibly be mistaken for a bass guitar. Certainly,
you can get unrealistic sounds out of new gear, as well, but since
unrealistic is the ONLY thing you can get out of new gear, that's a
plus in our book since we don't have to worry if a sound
is "unrealistic" enough.

Regards,
Saso.
