Yeah it can sound a lot like a DX but it's a little different and in some ways more flexible. Some people think of the VZ as a warm sounding DX (mostly because of the sawtooth waves on the VZ). Your impressions may vary. As for drum and percussion sounds the only really good ones that I ever got out of either the CZ or VZ were African woodblock sounding things. And this seemed easier to get to on the CZ. I've gotten some killer whining droning groans out of the VZ though. The CZ-1 is all around the best CZ synth wise and controller wise. There are a few caveats though if you intend to use the CZ1 as your primary controller. You have to hit the keyboard pretty hard to get high velocity and aftertouch readings out of it. I mean you really have to bang on the thing to get a velocity between 120 and 127. No big deal though as there are ways around this. The big trouble is that the local off setting doesn't disconnect the mod wheel (& pitch also I think) from the internal synth engine. This is a pain because if you're doing playback with the CZ-1 and attempting to control another device through the CZ keyboard the CZ will respond to the wheel changes (not the notes though) . There's no work around for that problem that I'm aware of. It's too bad too because apart from that the CZ1 would be a pretty good controller. That's interesting... Does it sound like Yamaha's DX- series, or does it really have a sound of its own? And as I understand, the CZ-series is quite unique sound wise...by the way, which one is better for drum and percussion sounds, the CZ or the VZ? Would it be a good idea to replace my CZ-3000 with the CZ-1 which I'd use as a MIDI controller, as well?
