Casio CZ v Casio VZ

Casio CZ v Casio VZ

2002-03-13 by artistirossetti

Hello.
As you might know, I'm a rather happy owner of the Casio CZ-3000. I
was thinking of buying a VZ-1, as well, but I'd like to know if I
really need it - do they sound pretty much he same or can either do
things that the other can't? How do they do head to head? Any
suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Saso.

They don't sound the same at all. Practically speaking they're like night
and day different. The VZ is much much more like a powerful FM synth where
the CZ is more like an analog (sound and structure wise).

Re: Casio CZ v Casio VZ

2002-03-14 by artistirossetti

An FM synth? That's interesting... Does it sound like Yamaha's DX-
series, or does it really have a sound of its own?

And as I understand, the CZ-series is quite unique sound wise...by
the way, which one is better for drum and percussion sounds, the CZ
or the VZ?

Would it be a good idea to replace my CZ-3000 with the CZ-1 which I'd
use as a MIDI controller, as well?

Regards,
Saso.

By the way I'm thinking of selling my VZ-8m
in good shape. I kinda like it but simply don't have
the time to program it due to other gear committments
(have a very large studio).

Offers are welcome.

I donno what to do. I really don't have time to utilize it.
It looks kinda cool, too, but my rack full...

I only barely scratched the surface of the CZ-101,
and I still have the starter kit, patches and all,
that wait to be explored. Just don't have time for
everything. When my Audity 2000 is finally repaired,
I shall have even less time. And I have 7 analogues,
too... Go figure...

RE: [CZsynth] Re: Casio CZ v Casio VZ

2002-03-14 by Furman, Jon W.

Yeah it can sound a lot like a DX but it's a little different and in some
ways more flexible. Some people think of the VZ as a warm sounding DX
(mostly because of the sawtooth waves on the VZ). Your impressions may vary.

As for drum and percussion sounds the only really good ones that I ever got
out of either the CZ or VZ were African woodblock sounding things. And this
seemed easier to get to on the CZ. I've gotten some killer whining droning
groans out of the VZ though.

The CZ-1 is all around the best CZ synth wise and controller wise. There are
a few caveats though if you intend to use the CZ1 as your primary
controller. You have to hit the keyboard pretty hard to get high velocity
and aftertouch readings out of it. I mean you really have to bang on the
thing to get a velocity between 120 and 127. No big deal though as there are
ways around this. The big trouble is that the local off setting doesn't
disconnect the mod wheel (& pitch also I think) from the internal synth
engine. This is a pain because if you're doing playback with the CZ-1 and
attempting to control another device through the CZ keyboard the CZ will
respond to the wheel changes (not the notes though) . There's no work around
for that problem that I'm aware of. It's too bad too because apart from that
the CZ1 would be a pretty good controller.

Hehehe..thought so!! Well I would keep it if I were you as its small, low
value, unobtrusive, only takes up 1 rack space and its presence in your
rack is the mark of a truly distinguished synthesist!! If you want I could
dig out some of my old VZ patches and pass them your way. Maybe that would
respark your interest or even possibly hasten your decision to sell the
little guy!

Well put John !
- heck- I've run out of Midi Ports in my rig- but I can't give up that VZ-
so I'm daisy chaining the little rascal off anther Rack unit.

Sure, I chain a lot of modules, too, but what do you use to channel
the MIDI data back in, if you want to save patches?

I'm up to my third MX-8 patchbay on top of MOTU XT, SoundBlaster
and GadgetLabs, and it's time I stopped :)))))))

hi saso and all,

i use all three - tx, cz, and vz. they sound quite different. IMHO the vz
lies between vz and cz. it has neither the crunchy sounds the tx is apt to
produce nor the 'plastic' sounds characteristic for the cz.

aargh - none. cymbals are atrocious. woodblocks are reasonable, as was
mentioned before. the cz-1 has a quite nice simmons drum preset, but
that's it. the vz does no better.

> use as a MIDI controller, as well?

yes, definitely, because the cz-1 has both velocity and channel aftertouch.
true, pitchbend and mod wheel are not affected by local off, but that is
a minor disadvantage.
BTW: i have no problem with the cz-1 keyboard, even with the higher
velocities. i like it.

I actually should have replaced these with two MOTU XT, with all
ins merging into a single out. But MX-8 are still a bit cheaper,
besides they do have some interesting functionality I might
use at some point (i.e. all sorts of MIDI processing), which
MOTU does not. Also, I know these units well enough and can
edit w/o a computer connected.
