Modifying an RC100 ROM card into an RA500 RAM card

2012-04-20 by Graham

So now that my old dead RA500 RAM card has been replaced, I decided to cut the old one open to have a look inside. If it wasn't too different to the reasonably common and cheap RC100 it might be possible to convert a ROM card into an RA500 by pulling out the ROM chip and putting in the RAM chip used in the RA500.

After opening it up, I found that it does look reasonably possible. There are only 2 extra components in there more than the ROM - a small logic chip and a diode. The RAM chip is the same size as the ROM chip and has almost the same pin layout to the ROM, so it would not be hard to re-rout the circuit board tracks to compensate for this. I wrote up my findings and posted them here at Steve's EZ-VZ website if anyone is interested in the possibility of DIY RA-500 RAM cards:
