On my MMT8s and HR16s, and on my mate's Sequential Sixtrak, I carefully 
buffed the contact fingers back to clean metal and soldered small 
surface-mount tact switches on.  Gives a nice positive click and will 
last another 20-odd years - it'll see me out...
