Same here. I thought they were talking about the VL-Tone (btw, I'm a happy owner of both a VL-1 and a VL-5).

As I can see from your picture, maybe we two talk about quite different instruments :-)

I didn't mean Casio VL1 from 80ies, that funny toy looking like a strange calculator...

I mean Yamaha VL1 from 1993, rather expensive physical modeling synthesizer, two voices of polyphony, big CCFL backlit B/W display 240 x 64 dots...

I have no idea what my rubber connectors are- perhaps out of another gadget....

It seems someone had the same thought I did - an outputted the display connections to something else:
