This is not correct, according to the CZ101 manual the unit will run on
6 D cell batteries (page 1 of the manaul).

CZ-101 problems, worth it to repair or just buy another?

2004-06-13 by Brandon Campbell

I bought a CZ-101 off Ebay a few years ago, but haven't really used it
very much because:

1. It doesn't want to run off batteries at all, only the AC adapter.
2. The connection to the AC adapter (bought new from the Casio
website) is very touchy and the power can cut in and out easily.
3. Some of the programming buttons don't seem to work at all,
specifically the ones for setting the volume envelope.

Any thoughts how much it would cost to repair these things? My
impression was it would probably cost almost as much (or perhaps more)
to have it shipped and repaired at a shop, as I paid for it in the
first place, and so maybe I should just buy another CZ instead? And
if I do, do any of the higher up CZ models run on batteries as well,
or just the 101? Finally, are there any decent patch editors that run
under Windows XP? This is my first non-toy keyboard, and I was
looking forward to playing around with it more spontaneously and not
just tethered to the computer.

actually it is way to much fun to give up on and with some effects--WOW
I find the battery are most important to save your patch work,, but
the time for programming is expensive on battery cost.. They last
longer as memory savors... so it is a must to get fixed.. unless you
midi. the buttons may just need a cleaning.. find a tech who will
check it out.. then you know!

good luck

Possibly the battery contacts are corroded due to previous leakage. Or a
wire is broken. It's impossible to tell exactly but it's unlikely that the
problem is anything difficult to fix.

Either it's dirty or the solder joints are bad.

I'm not sure if the 101 uses silicone dome switches (which would just be
dirty- it's very easy to clean) or tactile button switches (which would have
to be replaced). Tactile button switches require a bit more effort but it's
still a simple procedure.

No. These are very likely to be extremely simple problems that can be fixed
by anyone who can solder.

Not true at all - I even used mine as a battery-powered strap-on bass keyboard a few times in the late 1980s! Granted, it won't run on batteries for more than a few hours, but it definitely can. It even has an auto-power-off feature to save battery power. Btw, when my 101 eventually died about four years ago, I literally threw it away and bought a CZ-1 for £85 (about $120).

The cz101 doesnt run off batteries, they are there just for the
  memory back up!!!
