RA-3 Ram problem (does battery need replacement?)

I bought an RA-3 ram cart on ebay for my CZ101 but it only stores sounds for about 3 minutes. Should I change the 3v internal cart battery? I tried opening the cast after unscrewing the 3 visable screws but it made a very unhealthy cracking noise and I think both halves of the case have been glued. Is this normal? Any advice would be greatly apreciated! Cheers, J
