What CZs are good for...

What CZs are good for...

2001-04-18 by psychotropicsounds@hotmail.com

Good to get a few responses on how the CZ is used. It does create
some unique sounds that are hard to obtain from other sources. I've
noticed mine will produce a kind of distorted top end fizzle that I
quite like! (probably a lo-fi by-product of early digital tech...)
Some of the types of sounds I've been able to get out of it include
some nice flutely leads, metallic/ring modulated effects, plucked
string and bass sounds and some nice arcade game noises!

Anyone know about the lo-fi aspects of the CZ?

Hi Adam,

ringmodulation can create a lot overtones above the frequency that a synth
is limited to by it's internal sampling frequency, even todays synths do
have problems with that. I've been told that analog RM sounds much cleaner.
So digital RM can cause quite an amount of quantisation noise, what let the
CZ sometimes sound almost PPG like. Most older digital synths like PPG, DX,
CZ, VZ, D10, D50, MT32... have problems like that, that's why they sound
that much crisper then todays VAs, that internaly work with much higher
precision and resolutions...
Unfortunately that lack of resolution of those older synths also creates
alising "wistling" on higher notes... on the other hand I sometimes find
that alising quite nice...

Newer FX units often have a lo-fi option, which does add
crisp and crunch to any sound, if you wish.

I'm actually using it on analog synths (who don't have
quantization problems at all :)

VF-1 is very nice for that.

Well, every kind of old digital synth has it's own kind of aliasing, for
instance the ones of a CZ sound very different to the ones of a DX synth so
-in my opinion- emulating it with a Lofi FX isn't creating the real thing...
:-)

Finally, on this board, we are switching to the
only important topic in music, which is
"synth A sounds better than synth B and/or any emulation
thereof"

:))))))

cheers!

Not better, only different...
Since I like the character of those aliased quantisation noised CZ sounds, a
Lofi FX proabably won't be a replacement for the real thing, at least to me.
Other then that, a used original CZ maybe cost less then the FX ;)

My VF-1 costed me 5 times as much as my CZ, but look, I could have
picked a cheap low end FX module with terrible quantization problems
:)))

I used to own a Yamaha R100 and even I ultimately sold it, I kinda
liked the artifacts, so I'm with you on CZ.
