Powering on Casio VZ1

Powering on Casio VZ1

2005-11-20 by Arthur Alexander Crichton

Hi,

I recently bought a Casio VZ1 with rom card and flight case for 48
and I think there is a problem when switching on the synth.

When I switch on the synth I have to wait 4 seconds before I hear a
slight click before I can hear sounds when I play a note. Is this
normal or is there something wrong with my VZ1?

Please advise.

Arthur

Hi Arthur,

this is normal, it's a little relay to prevent loud clicks when turning on the
synth...

...Summa

It's fine. When some audio devices are switched on or off, there can be a
loud thump or other sound as everything is powered on. This can potentially
damage amplifiers or speakers (or at least be annoying), so it's good
practice to install relays in the audio path that switch on after a certain
amount of time has passed- this allows all of the circuitry to stabilize
before outputting anything.

So it's actually good engineering practice, though the delay does seem to be
a bit excessive. It makes me wonder what kind of horrible noises are
actually being produced during that time that they had to put the relays in.
