I don't calim to be an expert in electronics, but I know that the
optoelectronic coupler on the MIDI port actually died in my Bit 01 a
while ago, and it was a $6 part that my friend successfully
installed for me. If the unit seems healthy otherwise (like you can
change and edit patches and store them to memory), but the MIDI
functionality is gone, that could be one possibility.
Also, my VZ-8m behaved erratically when the backup battery died, you
might want to check it as well. I recommend buying a small plastic
enclosure for a AA or AAA battery (can be attached to the circuit
board with double sided mounting tape) and a lithium cell in that
format. It will last literally a lifetime. I've done this mod on my
unit.
