Casio CZ-1 ''the famous-1''

Casio CZ-1 ''the famous-1''

2005-11-28 by Johnny Retro

Hi there

Thanks for the email, good to be a member, so thanks...

My 1st Synth (ever) was a Casio CZ3000 in Mid-'86, when it was
released I paid £399 for it Brand New from amusic shop in London
just near Vauxhall Bridge, Kennigton. Your 1st Synth is always
Special. So I have fond memories of The CZ Range. I remember when the CZ101 came out a year before, I was at collage and some kid had a Casio
(demo) Tape of the CZ101, and we all listened to it in class and we
were impressed ! (well ahead of the game, at a buget price tag).
Anyways....Some years later, I sold my CZ3000, as I saw the Roland D-
 50. (no need to explain anymore)

Anyway, I've always said that I'd get another, So I have a CZ-1, Its
kind of a Special CZ-1, however. It belonged to Mr Vincent Clarke.
Its a long story how I aquired it. But its Mint condition, like New & was used by him in 1998 on Top of thePops (a live / mime appreance
on TV!) I can actually remember seeing this, before I owned his synth (bit weird, but true.) Anyway, its was also used by in his Studio, down by Tower
Bridge in London, on a few tracks that finally appreaed on the ''Innocents''LP
of the same year.

There are a few patches inside (I've written them down of course on
data sheet, sorry dudes, can't share these one) that were programmed by him, left in the machine ! (I've
had this varified too) anyway, its at home in my Studio, and I'm
proud to own it. Still a Superb machine, Looks and still sounds
great. & I'm actually after a CZ101 soon too, and maybe a VZ-1, the list never actually ends does it? maybe a CZ3000 as well, hey !

Anyway,

Thought I'd share that with you all,

Look forward to using the Group, and hope to get some patches on data
sheet format if you have any users that ''post'' these up on the site...

Best regards,

  Johnny G, Surrey, UK.

saw it in an interview with Vince & Andy in his roof studio!
This is very special (for me), yessssss.

I once had the idea to ask Vince in the EIS (erasure info service)
forum for some patches, but he sold his Synths years ago and I
rejected this.

and now you're the lucky one with the Casio.

why don't you share on of Vince' presets @ X-mas?? ;-)

Hey! Cosmo,

  thanks for the email

1st up, I Love your site! Saw it around a year ago, anyway, its cooL !

I think its excellent..Keep up the good work dude.

I rem the CZ-1 with fondness too, I can remember 'walking down' Tottenham Court Road in London, this is where all the music stores were at the time, and seeing a CZ-1 in the 'front window' of one shop, around about Sept 86, and thinking....

''Wow, the colours are fantastic!'' (I had a CZ3000) and wanted 1 too ! he he he...Great ''memories'' huh ?

I kept with my CZ3000, as the New CZ-1 was around about £900, maybe less if you market hagg'led the shop manager !

  Onto mine....

The original sounds he put in mine, were, as you know, done on a 101, he had the CZ-1 from Casio, they were trying Rreally hard to get that 'Pro market', even in 88, and knowing that Vince used the 101's before, they got him interested enough (gave him a Free CZ-1 basically, mine! ) as long as he would use it ''Live'' on Camera, Stage, Top of the Pops, so he agreed and I can actually Remember them on Top of the Pops using it, ''Live'' (not a video...)

I promised Vince ; - ) I'd not share his sounds with the world, a man of my word, I have to keep that. (sorry dude : - )

Keep smiling ; - ) Maybe one day, I mite sell it on ebays, all data-still in it !

  £1,000,0000 ?

  Maybe ! ; - )

  Best,

yes – still a real 80ies design: luv it! real cyan, real grey and plastic!

Vince played the Casios in the "oh L'amour Video" (hidden track in the
HITS! – DVD); get it if you're in erasure; and I've seen the CZ-1 in a
short Interview (guess it was around '87) with "taped" Keys where
Vince triggered his Samples...
I remember that CZ very well – all plastic and a lot of buttons ;-)
Later in the Music store I was very frustrated about the
Preset-Sounds. bulls*it! But Vince plays it so it MUST be cool ...
I picked up the CZ for 600 DM (300 Eur) and jammed all day (my fave
were the 3 Preset Brasses...

Re: [CZsynth] Re: Casio CZ-1 ''the famous-1''

2005-12-01 by Johnny Retro

Hey Cosmo !

  Just got your mail, thanks...

& Thanks for the info about the Erasure videos DVD, I will have to get that off ebays and take a look.

Hey, agreed. The colours of the CZ-1 are awesome, when I had the CZ3000, I would of loved to been able to ''buy'' the CZ-1, when I saw it in that shop window in London.

When I 1st saw it, I just thought, spot on, they have it pefect! ''Top-of-the-Range''

  The colours,

like a peppermint green, the ''reds'' of the bottons, & the Blue (savana?) LCD !!!! Wow, Cosmic ! Top dollar CZ Flag-Ship, Great !

Hey it Just looked SO ''Pro'', much better than any CZ before.

Retrospectivley, I also think it was great thing that it was the ''last'' CZ in the line up. A perfect finish for a Great range of products.

I'm glad they got this right too, as I think it would of been wrong, say, for them to make another CZ after this, Like, If they went & made a ''CZ-7'' or something, continued the line, and tried to compete with the DX7 II, or the D-50.

They got it right (again) Stayed True to ''Pure Synth''

& kept the next range '' PURE SYNTH, with the VZ-1.

  (Thankk God it wasn't S+S ! )

All I can say is, those were the days ''when Synths, were Real / Pure Synths'' : - )

  And Now?

Every year its ''just'' another ''re-packaged'' product, dressed up again and again (i'm talking Korg & Roland now...) Don't get me wrong, they make Great noises, but, One day, I hope that the Big Jap's will again make ''Pure Synths'' rather than re-packaged Roland U-20's every year, etc etc.....

S+S, Its a bit long in the tooth now, don't you think?

Bring BACK REAL SYNTHS ! I would BUY them, but I won't buy 2005 S+S.

Hey the only thing I have seen that makes me want something New in 2005, is the Dave Smith Poly-Evolver keyboard, even this is software, really..shame.

Hey, anyways, they don't make them like the used to huh?!

  Back to Erasure.

Have a listen to ''Who Needs Love Like That'
  the single from 1985.

I have quite a few sounds inside my CZ-1 that are in this Track, listen close to the intro synth line, you can hear one, he ''stacks / midis '' quite a few sounds when recording, but the ''CZ'' is there.

  MP3 Samples?

Would love to, but my Studio is a bit Retro (at the moment) Don't laugh to much (he he he, hey I am!)

But I'm still using an Atari ST Cubase combination, So no power PC yet (dOh!)

But, hey MP3 will be ''added'' at some point, soon I hope with a power PC, will let you know, & I'll post up a ''sample'' or two : - )

Hey, Its almost Christmas ! Great !

  Till then,

  ''Long Live the CZ''

  My Best,

  JR

the're some Casios on the DVD: 2 stacked in the "oh L'amour Video"
– here's the pic of YOUR CZ (lower Key) ;-)
the upper Keyboard is a CZ-101 – (see Mod-Wheel & knobs@side)

http://www.cosmosynthesizer.de/casiousr/vince_casio1.jpg
http://www.cosmosynthesizer.de/casiousr/Vince_2CZs.jpg

and here 2 nice pics with Vince & Eric Radcliffe in the Studio with a
rack of 4 (!) CZ-101 – and here's the Story (outtake from Sound on Sound):

"Vince Clarke (left) of synth popsters Erasure in the mid-'80s with
his engineer Eric Radcliffe, his stack of Casio CZ101 Phase Distortion
synths, and his BBC Model B-based UMI Sequencer. Each of the CZ101's
four multitimbral parts was addressable monophonically on a different
MIDI channel of the sequencer, which was highly novel at the time. But
Vince still needed several CZs to achieve the polyphony he wanted.
Within a few years he was getting around this problem by writing
records composed entirely of monophonic lines with no chords at all!"

I agree...

the Envolver? pure analog! Checked some samples: they bored me...
poly-poly-ultra-saws; nothing for me. I like it clean.

> Have a listen to ''Who Needs Love Like That'

yes, the intro is "CZed". I had this sound on my CZ-1 years ago – it
matched 100%; I had a backup on Disk on a Korg DF-1 data filer (quick
and easy: dump, save to disk, ready), but the DF-1 is dead now;
and I forgot where the Disk is.

you can send me a tape too ;-)

good... perfect setup for MIDI only.

And the lower one is a CZ-1000. You can see the
membrane buttons on some other shots from the
video.

So he had at least 4 101's, a 1000, and a 1. Not
to mention I have a picture of him with a VZ-10m
as well.

BTW-hello Cosmo, I finished that one song I sent
just a snippet to you of.

It has bunch of Casio CZ, Roland d-50 and DX...I
was going for the late 80's sound.

Hey Cosmo !

Many thanks for the links, much appreciated my friend

Hey I have not had chance (yet) to switch on my CZ-1 and check out some sounds, been busy at work and everything, but will get time this week...

Hey when we were talking about the ''Colours'', i thought some more on this....

& thinking about it a bit more, The CZ-1 colour scheme, is actually, really really quite unique.

The metallic metal body, those ''light'' blue buttons, the three ''Red'' buttons, the peppermint ''green'' outlining colours, and on the volume & chorus sliders, all the Red LEDS, and the Blue LCD....The Combination of all the colours together JUST makes it look Fantastic.

I actually think its prob' the most attractive Synth since the Jupiter 8. The combintaion of all these Colours Just make it look so cool.

I'd say it was the Best looking mid-80's synth, only 2nd to the Jupiter 8 !

Hey, changing subjects, I have a Great Slap Bass sound in my CZ-1, I'm going to ''post'' the data up, so you can all ''program'' in ''in'' your Synths (you may of all ready heard it?, Hey you May Not have ; - ) he he he

Ok, don't sit by your computer screens ''waiting for me to come back with the data'', as I'm here there and everywhere this weekend.......but I will ''post'' it up soon...

  Ok dude,

Thanks agin for the positive vibes,

  Speaka soon,

  Best,

I agree...

really..shame.

the Envolver? pure analog! Checked some samples: they bored me...
poly-poly-ultra-saws; nothing for me. I like it clean.

yes, the intro is "CZed". I had this sound on my CZ-1 years ago – it
matched 100%; I had a backup on Disk on a Korg DF-1 data filer (quick
and easy: dump, save to disk, ready), but the DF-1 is dead now;
and I forgot where the Disk is.

you can send me a tape too ;-)

good... perfect setup for MIDI only.

Hey Cosmo,

Can you email me your ''personal email address'', I'll send you a patch there, as I don't really want to ''post'' these patches via the user group, thanks...

the're some Casios on the DVD: 2 stacked in the "oh L'amour Video"
– here's the pic of YOUR CZ (lower Key) ;-)
the upper Keyboard is a CZ-101 – (see Mod-Wheel & knobs@side)

and here 2 nice pics with Vince & Eric Radcliffe in the Studio with a
rack of 4 (!) CZ-101 – and here's the Story (outtake from Sound on Sound):

"Vince Clarke (left) of synth popsters Erasure in the mid-'80s with
his engineer Eric Radcliffe, his stack of Casio CZ101 Phase Distortion
synths, and his BBC Model B-based UMI Sequencer. Each of the CZ101's
four multitimbral parts was addressable monophonically on a different
MIDI channel of the sequencer, which was highly novel at the time. But
Vince still needed several CZs to achieve the polyphony he wanted.
Within a few years he was getting around this problem by writing
records composed entirely of monophonic lines with no chords at all!"

it in that shop window in London.
