Re: overview question & answers

Re: overview question & answers

2001-09-05 by HC

Hello,

thanks - that's very good information, thanks to y'all - maybe one detail: As I already have two very good master controllers - a Yamaha CP70D with MIDI out, and a Yamaha KX88 - I will probably not really use the keyboard of any other Casio I buy. Is the "velocity-insensitivity" of all Casios except the CZ-1 caused by the keyboard only, or do they at least accept that MIDI command?

thanks again for all the help!

HC

=======================================

only the CZ-1 responds to incoming velocity data. i think it's also the
only one that responds to after-touch.

Yup the CZ-1 is the only one that has these features at all. Unfortunately
the CZ1 is also the most massive Casio ever. Speaking of phase distortion
with real time control (which the CZ1 almost touches on) does anyone here
have a Novation Supernova? I remember that when they came out they were
advertised is having a feature that sounded a lot like Casio CZ phase
distortion, I've always been curious about this. It might be that if you
really want good phase distortion with real time control the supernova is
the way to go. Anyone ever check one of these out?

RE: [CZsynth] Re: overview question & answers

2001-09-06 by jim

i forwarded the nova/cz question to a mate, here is his knowledgeable and
interesting reply,

-------------
Okay you asked for it... Deep breath...and....

The SuperNova (and Nova for that matter) do not model
Casio's propietory Phase Distortion synthesis but the
same sorts of sounds can easily be achieved.
But let's not forget, it doesn't matter if one synth
does one type of synthesis and another does a different
type. It's the sound your after, right ? Harsh screaming
CZ lead sounds I presume (that's all I get out of my CZ
anyway !) Anyway, to get those pseudo FM sounds from your
SuperNova you need to use "Oscillator Sync".
This takes two oscillators and uses one (The Master) to reset
the other (The Slave) each time is starts a new cycle. This
creates piercing metallic sounds and is good for leads.
BTW. the SuperNova does not require 2 oscillators for this
effect, it is processed from one oscillator using virtual
modelling algorithms (handy !). Using "Oscillator Sync"
(now here comes the meat!) opens up a new set of realtime
control parameters "Key Sync", "Formant Width" and (most
importantly for this question) "Sync Skew". "Sync Skew"
manipulates the frequency of the "The Slave" oscillator
within one cycle of "The Master" oscillator. Modulation
over 100% can be achieved allowing cycles to be 'swashed'
over each other into one original one. This is yer Frequency
Modulation ! "Formant Width" controls the leves of the
"Slave" oscillator and allows you to simulate
resonance within the oscillator by using the "Soften"
parameter to smooth out the sharp edges of the waveform.

If you have a Nova or SuperNova, try playing around with
some of these oscillator parameters using a square or saw
waveform. You'll soon be making screaming CZ-type leads
but with the addition of 3 realtime control parameters !

Thanks for obtaining all that detailed information Jim, I can tell that your
friend really loves his synths. I always thought that the SuperNova looked
like a lot of fun. You guys should check out this pdf file
http://www.novationuk.com/downloads/pdfs/supernovafuture.pdf
<http://www.novationuk.com/downloads/pdfs/supernovafuture.pdf> .Check out
the side note, Bend Me Shape Me, in particular describing the waveshaping
capabilities, especially the diagram outlining the soften feature. It looks
like the soften feature can continuously morph a square wave down to a sine
wave. This diagram at least should look very familiar to any one whose read
the CZ manual, not sure if the soften feature really is or sounds the same
as the CZ's PD but it sure as heck looks just like it in that picture.

Just my 2 cents:

Well it really isn't an exclusive Supernova feature,
most analogs have it.

Quasimidi's Polymorph and Sirius also have the sync'd
waveforms available in a single OSC.

Hi

think it's the so called "hardness" parameter of the Nova synths familiy
that enables the soundprogrammer to make CZ like sounds. That modulateable
paramter allows to reduce the waveforms of an oszillator to a sinus and thus
working like the DCW parameter of the CZ. You find the same parameter on the
AN1x, but I don't know if it's possible modulate it by envelope or LFO. That
way it's probably possible to create some CZ like sounds. But missing the
complex envelopes and the resonant waveforms, that would be at least needed
in front and not behind of the ring modulator to create some of the realy
interesting CZ sounds, it's probably a bit limited.

Other then that you can do a lot of CZ like sounds with the FS1R. If you
look at the Yamaha patents you'll recognise that Phase Distortion or Phase
Modulation is the same technique Yamaha is using in their "FM" synths.
Unfortunately it's not possible to take a look at the programming of the CZ
to see how they implemented that algortithm...

RE: [CZsynth] Re: overview question & answers

2001-09-06 by Furman, Jon W.

I always thought that the way that PD is implemented on the CZ is not that
similar to what's on the DX's practically speaking. That's why the two don't
sound anything like each other and the CZ is so easy to program. The
algorithm that Casio uses is not that complicated, it's very clever actually
although it is a bit different for each of the waveforms that the CZ can
distort a sine wave too. Now PD as you see on the VZ is much more similar
to what you see on a DX, those too really do share a lot of common ground.

RE: [CZsynth] Re: overview question & answers

2001-09-06 by john w.

hey everybody,

I keep hearing all of this talk about "distinctive
screaming CZ leads".... but I have never heard that
kind of sound come from my cz! Does anybody have one
of these types of patches written out? Not like a
file, but something that is typed out, and i would
have to manually enter into the synth.

Thanks,

Nate

Get in touch with people from "Orbital Decay".

They have fantastic demos of CZ sounds on their site.

Maybe then can share their patches -- if they
do, let me know :)

Theirs is the only CD I ever bought on mp3.com.
Brilliant musicians and CZ-experts, too!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
