new user!

2001-09-11 by alistair colling

hi everyone, i just got a cz3000 the other day and it is my first experience of synthesis which is quite exciting. i make dance music mostly and have in the 2 days i have owned the synth i found some pretty nice sounds coming out of the machine! i am looking forward to learning how to use the cz properly and attain the sounds that i want to get from it. if anyone could suggest a good patch editor i would be really grateful and i am also having problems triggering 2 different voices at once using my sequencer (cakewalk). if anyone could give me a step by step guide to using the multi-timbral triggering that would be very useful. i have selected the m.mode for the voice and pressed the 'solo' button so the light is on then set the channels for 2 differnet voices but the channels of both voices stay the same. if anyone could help me to do this i would be very appreciative.
thanks
ali

Hi Ali,

You asked about an editor:

If you are using PC or Mac: go to a music retailer that sells emagic
software. Ask for a demo version of Sound Diver. This is free. The
only buts are: *You can't build up a patch library that's storable in
your computer, because you can't save patches in the program.*Midi-
out terminates after 30minutes so you have to restart the program to
keep going. *if you decide you like the software its a little costly.

However, its still very useable: * It has a good graphic interface *it
will send sound parameters to your CZ just fine. * when an edited
sound is sitting in your CZ's temporary memory you can then save it
manually and fill your CZ up with patches, no problem. *there are
editing interfaces in Sound Diver for many other synths as well.

So, your available library will be limited to the 32 patches you store
in your CZ. I don't mind this too much as I find when I gain
experience editing on a synth, I start remembering how to set up my
most favoured patches from scratch. Also, I often work with a bank of
sounds for a period of time time and then deliberately erase them so
that I can move on to new things...

Another possibility is to find a cheap Atari computer (or maybe an
emulator for PC??). There are some very usable (ie: as good as Sound
Diver) Atari CZ editor/librarian programs available at Tim's Atari
Midi World site for free.

Regards
Adam

And then if you have a MIDI dump utility running, just in case,
it's easy to create and save as many libraries as you want.

I'm sure you'll get asnwers to this -- I personally
use Cubase (the sequencer) to dump Sysx to.

I found that Mark Glinsky's CZ Start Up Kit is the best thing you can
do. You get about 2,750 patches plus manuals and "zen" CZ philosphy
for $20! Can't beat this deal anywhere!! And I mean it! And I'm
NOT Mark Glinsky! Find the kit on Ebay...
