Circuitry of CZ Analog Chorus

Circuitry of CZ Analog Chorus

2007-09-27 by yazzofever

Has anyone opened up their CZ and looked at the chorus circuitry.
Apparently I've been told it's analog. Does anyone have some
info/pictures? I ask because, I'm quite fond of the chorus on my
cz5000, in fact I feel it does something quite extraordinary to the
sound. I feel it almost makes the casio sound like it is being run
through a VCF. I used to not like the chorus because of how much it
mutes the sound, but I'm learning how to layer sounds together, some
with chorus, some with not, to come up with something that is quite
impressive.

I feel the chorus on the Casio makes this digital synth something
really special-almost like other digital/analog hybrid synths from that
time period.

Nobody has responded to this so for those who thought "i will let
someone else handle this" please let me know what you found when you
opened up your casio cz.

i would like to know what is the components that make up the casio cz
5000/cz 1 chorus effect. i belive it was analog. is the chorus in
the casio cz5000 the same as the cz1 and cz3000?

Re: Service Manual in PDF? Casio CZ5000/CZ1/CZ3000

2007-10-24 by narfman96

Micah,

I have the CZ5000 Service Manual but I need to scan it and make a PDF.
I can probably try to do it this weekend. The chorus circuit looks to
be the same for the CZ5000 and the CZ1 from what I can see. The signal
is compressed and goes through a bucket brigade then it gets expanded
again. I don't have the schematics with me so I can't give specifics.

I've looked everywhere for a copy of the CZ1 Service Manual and will
gladly pay for a PDF or paper copy of this doc. I have my CZ1 apart
right now to replace the backlight and I'm working with Sandy Morgan
who is on Ebay as "chemicalculture" to get a new one. I just sent the
backlight assy to her so she can make a new up. Then it will be one of
her standard offerings on Ebay.

I'm also looking for a manufacturer that makes aftertouch strain gauge
assy's. I have a busted up Yamaha SY22 that I'm going to try and get
the aftertouch strip to fit into the CZ1. It would be better if I could
find out who makes these for the synth manufacturers though. Then I
could order up a better replacement instead of making a "Casiaha"
or "Yamasio" version work. I can't seem to figure out what to look for
in Google. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Feel free to email me at narfman96 at yahoo dot com and/or we can
discuss this further here...

Narfman,

I have a question about your plan to retrofit the CZ-1 with an
aftertouch strip. Even if you got one fitted in the case, what would
you connect it to? There's probably not any circuitry in the CZ-1 to
connect it to. Would you try to make it control the existing modulation
circuit, or vibrato circuit?

Or would you send the aftertouch signal to some external box? And if so,
wouldn't that external box have to be a custom piece of hardwdare to
take the aftertouch signal from the strip and convert it into something
useful.

It's an interesting idea, that's why I'm wondering how it would work.

The CZ-1 already has mono aftertouch (I know - I owned one). I think Narfman is talking about replacing the broken strip on his unit with a more readily available replacement.

Re: Service Manual in PDF? Casio CZ5000/CZ1/CZ3000

2007-11-01 by narfman96

The CZ-1 is the only synth in the CZ line that comes with aftertouch
even though all it does is activate the vibrato. The CZ-1 is also
velocity sensitive and the patches scale the DCO, DCW, and DCA from 0-
15. All of the patches from the other CZ's will load but they will
have these parameters set to 0. The CZ-1's patches will work in the
other CZ's. They will ignore the velocity settings.

I tried the SY22 aftertouch strip but it was too narrow from front to
back at 1/4 inch. The black and white keys hit the original strip in
2 different areas 1/4 inch apart. The original strip is almost 3/4
inch wide.

I did figure out what is wrong with the aftertouch though. There are
rubber strips that have 4 rows of very fine carbon vanes that make
the connection between 2 stainlees steel bands that run under the 61
keys. There are 3 rubber strips 12" long to span the distance. The
entire assembly is sandwiched by felt glued to foam rubber. It's
mounted in a plastic strip and held in with 2 sided tape. One of the
rubber strips has become non-conductive from the drink that was
spilled in it before I purchased the synth. A portion of the foam
rubber is bad too. I may try getting some of the conductive paint
that restores the carbon. I tried a soft lead pencil but it wouldn't
work.

I also scanned the CZ5000 Service Manual if anyone wants it. It's 60
pages and 9.8 mb. It explains a lot of the circuitry and why the CZ
sounds like it does.

Oh, woops! My mistake... I have had enough keyboards come and go in the
past few months that I'm getting them all mixed up. I actually have a
CZ-1, but (apparently!) I haven't been using it enough! On the bright
side, at least dumb questions are easy to answer. :c)

I just have to say that narfman(Fran) is a truly
great person by photocopying the cz5000 service
manual for this list. It is really a great act
of generosity and took a lot of time.

I speak for everybody, thank you Fran.

Howdy,

You might want to call the Alesis people. They have an aftertouch
strip on the QS line although I don't know how it works,
(capacitive/resistive).
