congrats.....

was that the one in peurto rico? with a memory card?

actually, with the CZ-1, you can program sounds into all 64 locations, and
still recall the factory sounds.

i don't have the manual in front of me, and i never have much reason to do
it, but it can be done.

Wow...that's a good deal, this will be the best $110 synth you've ever
bought!! I paid $300 for mine back in the mid 90s and I thought that was a
good deal.

RE: [CZsynth] cz-1

2001-10-17 by Troy C

I can't keep this one to myself...

Back in 1995 I was in Sam Ash in New York and a dude walked in trying to
sell his CZ-1, but apparently they had a lot of used gear in stock and
they didn't wanna take anything that they could get big money for, so
they wouldn't take it. I overheard the conversation that the guy with
the CZ was having with the salesman, so I offered to buy it from him.
The guy was looking to sell it for $100 with a Casio hard case. I asked
him "Well, how do I know it works?" He said "It works"
I asked the salesman if I could just plug the keyboard in to see if it
worked, but the salesman refused, so I told the guy I couldn't buy it (I
would never buy anything from someone who just walked of the streets of
NYC with out at least pluging it in)
Apparently the guy was desperate to sell the CZ-1, because he said "Ok
you can have it for 40 bucks."
So I bought it, took it home and pluged it in...it worked perfectly,
looked brand new without a scratch, AND came with a case.

yes, that's very cool. BTW: it's not easy to find a cz-1... they are
quite rare, now.
anyway, i'll never sell mine even if they turn cult and cost $1000
(remember the roland tr-808 hype - ridiculous!).

All we need for that to happen is for some new genre of music to be built
around some Casio CZ patch. The Lately Bass patch for FMs, the "hoover"
patch for Junos; each defined a genre of music. What would a good CZ patch
be to build a new musical genre around? Suggestions?

How about one of those silly CZ cat "meow" patches? The genre could be
"MeowCore" or "Cat-Hop."

already been done.
the organ patch on the cz101 was used by doug lazy and lots of other hip hop and house people. the cz bass was used by a lot of R&B people (and has been documented)...

the thing which will prevent the cz series from acheiving 909 like price and status is the fact that it is "just a(nother) CASIO" in most peoples minds.

plus, i have heard that casio has a habit of getting rid of parts only 2 or 3 years after they discontinue items. i wonder what i will do when my VZ craps out! things to think about. :(

meowcore. now thats a good idea.

Wow talk about a lucky deal, $40 is almost free! The CZ-1 is a very high
quality synth too. It's not toyish at all with velocity and a dynamic DCW.
The other CZ's were cool especially for the $ but they didn't go all the way
feature wise. The CZ-1 however does.

RE: [CZsynth] cz-1

2001-10-18 by Furman, Jon W.

I think that any distinctive popular famous Casio like sound would have to
rely on the 8 stage envelope as this was one of those things that really
made the CZ unique. I'm thinking of stuff like the CZ preset Ace Of Base
used for the synth solo on I Saw The Sign (please don't get me wrong I'm not
an Ace Of Bass fan but any band that uses the CZ like that has to have
something going for them).

i wouldn't say it goes all the way, but it sure goes much farther than the
other CZ-synths.

my wish list for the CZ-1 would be:

- assignable targets for the LFO
- assignable targets for the velocity & aftertouch
- real-time MIDI control of all parameters (preferably with CC, not sysex)
- an option to have one DCO FM the other DCO
- a rack version (CZ-1r ???) with 4+ outputs

anyone else have a wish list?

This is why I'm starting to stock up on my CZ/VZ gear. If I see a good
price on ebay, I'll go for it. I think I only paid $80 for my last
VZ-8m.

Haha...ok you're right, it's not all the way by today's standards. But for
1986 or whenever it was that it was released it does a lot. I always wished
that it would respond in real time to sysx kind of like the rolands from
that time period do.

my main complaint about the CZ and VZ is the noise. otherwise, they are the perfect "toy" synths :) i feel sorry for people who dont take the time to program these.

I can't keep this one to myself...

Back in 1995 I was in Sam Ash in New York and a dude walked in
  trying to
sell his CZ-1, but apparently they had a lot of used gear in stock
  and
they didn't wanna take anything that they could get big money for,
  so
they wouldn't take it. I overheard the conversation that the guy
  with
the CZ was having with the salesman, so I offered to buy it from
  him.
The guy was looking to sell it for $100 with a Casio hard case. I
  asked
him "Well, how do I know it works?" He said "It works"
I asked the salesman if I could just plug the keyboard in to see if
  it
worked, but the salesman refused, so I told the guy I couldn't buy
  it (I
would never buy anything from someone who just walked of the streets
  of
NYC with out at least pluging it in)
Apparently the guy was desperate to sell the CZ-1, because he said
  "Ok
you can have it for 40 bucks."
So I bought it, took it home and pluged it in...it worked perfectly,
looked brand new without a scratch, AND came with a case.

how do you guys use your vz8ms? the panning feature is great but i dont have the patience to wait for sounddiver to transmit the patch every time its tweaked and i would never waste my time programming it from the front panel. this is why i prefer the vz10m.

This is why I'm starting to stock up on my CZ/VZ gear. If I see a
  good
price on ebay, I'll go for it. I think I only paid $80 for my last
        VZ-8m.

No, not only that it was a lowly CZ101 preset. Instantly recognizable to
anyone who's ever owned one. I'm talking about that strange whistley sound
with the weird decay (that's where the 8 stage env comes into play).

I think that any distinctive popular famous Casio like sound would

really

That's interesting, I use Unisyn to edit the 10m and the 8m and I haven't
noticed any difference in transmission time between the 2 models. I wonder
if this a Sounddiver bug.

Re: [CZsynth] cz-1

i have found that the problem using any VZ with sounddiver is that every time i release a fader ive tweaked, theres a delay waiting for the whole patch to transmit before i can play the sound. for this reason i prefer to program the vz from its front panel.

That's interesting, I use Unisyn to edit the 10m and the 8m and I haven't
noticed any difference in transmission time between the 2 models. I wonder
  if this a Sounddiver bug.

how do you guys use your vz8ms? the panning feature is great but i
dont have the patience to wait for sounddiver to transmit the patch every
time its tweaked and i would never waste my time programming it from the
front panel. this is why i prefer the vz10m.

I hear you. I'd like to have a few more 8m's myself to try out the
  link
function and see how well that works.

Re: cz-1

2001-10-29 by psychotropicsounds@hotmail.com

Yes, this is weird. I've had the same problem.
I've been able to overcome this by not having a midi cable connected
between the midi out socket on the CZ and midi in on the computer.

I think what happens is that if the CZ is sending Midi to the
computer, Sound Diver tries to confirm with the cz that the last data
sent has been recieved. The acknowledgement exchange between sound
diver and the cz is slow for some reason. If the the cz is receving
midi in but not sending any out to the computer, sound diver seems to
just take for granted that everything is OK and there is no hold-up
and keeps on sending out patch data... Or something like that.

This problem doesn't seem to happen with other editors. I favour my
Atari for editing.

Hope that helps.

Adam
