CZ 101 lcd display

CZ 101 lcd display

2010-04-14 by steph_g_87

Hi everibody !
I'm new there and sorry for my english, i,m french, I'll try to do my best ;)

I just boutgh a CZ 101 yesterday... cheap.. but with a bunch of issues
first, some switch and keys were dead.. I have cleaned every keys/contacts/ and
because of a batterie leak I even have to rebuilt some of the contact paterns with conductive ink (they were totaly erased from the board !!)

The CZ works fine, sounds are clean, no distortion or weird noises.
I have built a compartment to hold à 9v battery (just to keep the memory,
I rather use an 9v power supply)

The main issue (I should say that's a blind issue ;) ) is that the display
doesn't work ! The LCD board is well soldered but there's nothing on the screen
not even random pixels or whatever...

I would like to now if a hd4470 16x2 standard display like this would fit :
http://www.oomlout.co.uk/lcd-display-16-x-2-p-212.html?zenid=1113c67399971628ef01f1c4671564f7

Thx

Stephane

Hi Stephane,

There is a copy of one listed on Ebay for the CZ-101. The location is in Missouri and it's $9.99 US. Make sure you ask the seller if it contains the pages you need. The item number is 180489658982 and the seller will send it as a pdf file.

Good luck, Fran

The CZ works fine but there is still an issue with the keyboard..
All the F and B keys don't work ! And that doesn't come from the keyboard itself

RE: [CZsynth] Re: CZ 101 lcd display

2010-04-15 by Ullrich Peter

And the CZ101/CZ1000 Service manual can be found for free on the net and it about 3MB.
The link was http://www.mediafire.com/file/4gznmodk3vt/CZ1000ServiceManual.pdf when I loaded it.

I had a look at it and compared it with the LCD Stephane mentioned:

The LCD connection can be found on page two (upper mid) of the reference service manual.
The pinning is the same except that the backlight adds another two pins that have to be connected
To pins 1 and 2 with the addition of an resistor - see manual for the right value for the selected backlight color.

Ciao
Peter

Be carefull not to draw too much current for the backlight. I use a 2k up to a 20k resistor to limit the current to the backlight depending on led brightness.

Peter, The clear & legible schematics are awesome! Thanks! Everyone keeps asking about the rest of the service docs so they can setup the test points. That's why we're looking for the complete doc.

Nicely done! and thanks for the link to the display you used. I've been
wanting to add a backlit display to my CZ1000 for some time now.

Re: CZ 101 lcd display

2010-04-15 by steph_g_87

Yes, that's really easy to do (i'm a real electronic noobs !!)
this is not exactly this display, but all the hd44780 compatibles are mostly the same
but as narfman said, just be carful to not feed it with full 9v :D !

anyway, this was easy but the keyboard issue is way over my skills :(
I should use my CZ as an expander for my master M-audio keyboard ;)

I just picked up one with white characters on a blue background. I'm not new
to synth DIY so this mod should be cake, as you guys have done the hard part
for me; the research :-)

Hi Steph!

Due to the schematics it looks like the keyboard error has to be on the line KI6 as all
F and B keys are controlled via this line. See schematics page 7.

Ciao

Yeah thx ! I just have to follow the ja7 on the ma1m board
that leads to the... pin 13 of the 74hc241 tri state buffer
All I have to do is checking with my multi between the key contact and the chip pin
thx !!

The K16 path is involved with other switches : preset 6, internal, DCW1 env, DCW2 env
and enventualy all the F and B keys ...

And guess what ? all of them don't work ! :))

I've checked the line from the key board/preset board/synth board
to the main board and right to the 74hc241 tri state buffer's pin 13 (2A2)
where the K16 ends and it's ok... so the problem is beyond this chip

RE: [CZsynth] Re: CZ 101 lcd display

2010-04-16 by Ullrich Peter

Hi Steph!

So there could be different errors:

The 74HC241 is damaged: change necessary

The KI6 line has a short to GND or VCC

If you have an oscilloscope or logic analyzer you could check if the scan pattern will
be received on this line (Pin 13) if one of the keys in this line is pressed.
If not than there may be a short to GND or VCC...

If you can measure the pattern than check if the HC241 gives this pattern on its output (Pin 7)
if the Buffer Enable (Pin19) is enabled (High). If not the HC241 could be damaged - exchange it!

If you don't have a scope nor a logic analyzer but you are able to built quite simple circuits than
You could think of builing a simple and cheap 4 Bit logic analyzer that works via a serial interface
Or with an USB to serial converter via USB. The Scanalogic: www.ikalogic.com/scanalogic_home.php
If you built the 16MHz crystal version (data for it and HEX files can be found in the Forum on this page)
it is able to scan with 4MHz - that's enough for the keyboard scanner to check. I built the scanalogic
and it works fine!

Ciao
Peter
