replacement for VZ-10M LCD display (or VZ-1, FZ-1)

replacement for VZ-10M LCD display (or VZ-1, FZ-1)

2011-05-06 by dlonrattam

Hi folks,

I was thinking of completely replacing the LCD display in my VZ-10M, and I was wondering if you have any advice.

The EL-foil backlight has almost completely faded (and I understand that I could just replace the foil), but the response time of the ancient LCD panel is also a bit sluggish, etc. -- and I'm sure things would be greatly improved with a more modern part.

In fact, I have already had success upgrading my Kawai K5000W with a fabulous "reverse" white-on-blue LED backlit display. It also suffered from a faded EL-foil. It felt like getting a whole new synth!

So... has anyone here already done something like this to their VZ-10M? Or perhaps VZ-1 or FZ-1 (which I believe use the same display)?

Most importantly, does anybody know of a compatible part, preferably LED backlit, or using some other (non-EL) light source? Of course, I've tried Googling, but no luck yet.

Does anyone have the VZ-10M, VZ-1, or FZ-1 service manual? (I do not.) If so, could you try to find the original part number or other clues for me?

I'll be sure to share anything I find out as well.

Cheers!
- Matt

I would certainly be interested in any info - My Fz has no backlight and the RZ1 has a failed backlight too. I recall that either the CZ or DX forum guys mentioned that there was a site that offered backlight replacement...I will trawl my back emails....someone had also replaced a backlight in a Cz I think using Acrylic plastic and LEDS.....

A quick search revealed this from the DX forum:

I am pretty sure there is another link - but I have quite a few mails about backlights - will have another look later.

Re: replacement for VZ-10M LCD display (or VZ-1, FZ-1)

2011-05-06 by dlonrattam

Thanks Lee.

I am aware of the EL-foil replacements. In fact, you can easily make replacements yourself out of larger sheets that can be obtained pretty cheaply (you can cut EL-foil to size) -- just look on ebay. This is a fine solution (and can restore displays to "like new" performance) but as with the original foil, the replacement will eventually fade.

So, I am sick of EL foils and am seeking a more permanent solution. would like to give my VZ-10M either:
1) a non-EL backlight behind the original display, or
2) a whole new display with some kind of non-EL backlight.

The posting about the CZ-101 with the home made LED backlight is along the lines of what I'm interested in. I would love to find out if there is a ready-made modern replacement I can just drop into my VZ (like I did with my K5000W).

Thanks Jammie.

Do you happen to have these schematics in electronic form, so I could take a look? Or, could you take a look and see if they show a part number or other designation for the display?

Also, do have a link for these FIP panels you mentioned?

Cheers,

Hi all,

Please see my post http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CZsynth/message/4513

and photos

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CZsynth/photos/album/1481989801/pic/list

hope this helps... though the VZ display is much larger... it would be a
challenging DIY thing but I think it cn be done. Look for flat LEDs.

best

  Thanks Jammie.

Do you happen to have these schematics in electronic form, so I could take a look? Or, could you take a look and see if they show a part number or other designation for the display?

Also, do have a link for these FIP panels you mentioned?

  Cheers,
  - Matt
