Need repair technician for CZ-5000

Need repair technician for CZ-5000

2013-09-14 by jay.mitchell@prodigy.net

I just bought a CZ-5000 on eBay that stated "everything works!" but when it arrived, the keys act as if sustain pedal is jammed on, but no pedal is hooked up. Each key remains sustained as others are hit....obviously not working.

Where are there repair shops that can do the repair on this instrument?

Thanks
Jay

Have you plugged MIDI into a PC and analyzed if it's actually
delivering note off message or not?

It's possible it thinks sustain pedal is down.

Good luck!!

Sustain pedals are switches that are normally open or normally closed. Try plugging a 1/4" jack into the sustain footswitch socket, see if it makes a difference. Its possible that the connection at the jack should be closed but is open - or vice versa. A bit of Googling should reveal what the Synth is expecting to see and allow you to experiment a little. Once you know what is required, you might even want to get a sustain pedal!

Few questions:

Does it behave like this with all sounds?

Have you tried to put Sustain pedal into Sustain jack and THEN switch
on the instrument?

Have you tried system initialization?

I suppose all of you CZ freaks have this book:

"An Insider's Guide to Casio CZ Synthesizers" by Andrew Schlesinger
PDF (24 megs)

If not, you can download it here:

I haven't compared the quality of what we already have to these:

http://archive.org/search.php?query=casio%20cz

Many other manuals for other synths, etc. at archive.org.

the quality of the scans of the cz5000 manual you can find on the net is, well, horrible. when i bought my cz5000 last year i decided to make the manual more legible. i found out that most of the pages in the (beautifully scanned) cz3000 manual are exactly the same, so i used these where possible. other parts of the cz5000 manual needed to be manually "upgraded", like the sequencer pages. i put the much better quality of the cz5000 manual on my site for download:

Have you taken it apart and looked at the pedal jack? If it has one of those internal switches like headphone jacks it could be stuck or something.

Re: Need repair technician for CZ-5000

Hey Dan. It behaves that way with all sounds. I got it in to a technician, who examined it and said that the sustain input jack was shorted. Also, someone did a custom mod to the sustain input circuit with an op amp chip and a capacitor. It was crudely taped onto the board, so clearly not a professional job. Any idea what someone was trying to accomplish? Is this a documented mod?

The seller has told me that he bought it used from a music shop and had no idea it was modified. He also said it never worked without a sustain pedal hooked up to it.

In the meantime, the tech was afraid to disconnect the mod out of fear of disabling the keyboard. He replaced the jack and tested it. He said it is functioning now...haven't picked it up to verify. My guess is that the sustain function does something non-standard.

Thanks for any insights.

Thanks Bill. I do need to buy a sustain pedal. But it was revealed that someone did a custom mod on the input circuit too. See my reply to Dan below.
