VZ-10m, Roland UM-One mk2, Windows 8 help

2014-05-09 by <nbwmail@...>

Can anyone help me get my windows computer to talk to my newly purchased VZ-10m? I have the proper connections (Roland Out-to-VZ In & Roland In-to-VZ Out), Windows is communicating properly thru the Roland UM-One (proper lights flash when sending Midi to VZ using the Windows Midi-OX program), speakers are plugged into the VZ and volume is up. I get no indicators or sound from the VZ. I have the VZ-10m manual, the Power Play manual, and assume I may need to set the VZ into some mode in order to accept I coming MIDI and play it but am unable to find such. My ultimate goal is to use an Editor/Librarian to create my own sounds, save them to the RAM Card that came with the unit, and plug the RAM Card into my Casio PG-380 Midi guitar for use there. Thanks for any and all help in advance.

I don't use Windows, and don't have VZ (sold my VZ1 and VZ10m many years ago), so here are just general points...

It seems to me you mix two things - basic MIDI communication and SysEx data.

First try if VZ responds properly when controlled from MIDI keyboard and from software sequencer.

If there's no sound, then there's some problem in communication, setting, or in VZ itself. You can also try initialization (which will return factory settings including sounds):

All Initialization:
Power Off, hold Write button + Power On

If this connection works, you can check SysEx communication.

It's necessary to enable SysEx communication, and set Memory Protect Off.

Be sure you have proper data file, and set the receive channel to the same one in data file.

If it doesn't work, try to change individual elements in your system chain - try different computer, different software, different MIDI interface, different MIDI cable, or different VZ (or other synth to be sure that communication works).

another thing you could try:

install that virtual atari thing on your pc, find the vz version of the
caged artist programs at tim's atari world, and use that to access
the vz. good old school no nonsense software :)

STEem

steem-engine - Steem - Atari ST Emulator - Google Project Hosting

i used to edit my vz with my atari like that - hey: **get an atari bro **

:) lol i mean it, atari work *fine*.. midi ox just doesn't look too much
fun to me i can never get my head around it, or i open it up and it
says 'offputting GUI!' and i feel tired suddenly.
(please could we have a tutorial for midi ox from an expert?)

best thing you can do for your VZ is buy it it's own computer
to edit it, eh. (and your tx's and the like. atari is a useful thing
to have these days, there's loads of software for it-and you don't have to fart
around with usb-midi...i mean as last recourse, you know you can rely on
an atari for MIDI if you can't get it running with a pc..)

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
