Has anyone opened up a CZ-1?

Has anyone opened up a CZ-1?

2014-11-28 by device.monkey@...

Hi,

Recently I bought a nice old CZ-1, unfortunately, the pitch wheel has become disconnected and has fallen inside. The fault was there when I bought it (poor guy, it broke while he was demonstrating it). I mostly use the CZ via MIDI, but the keyboard's actually quite good, so I would like to fix it anyway.

The day I bought it, I opened up some of the synth, but couldn't seem to easily access the part where the two wheels are (on the left of the keyboard). I put it back together before I did anything silly...

Today I downloaded a service manual for the CZ-5000 (v. similar synth), but I couldn't really make sense of it. Has anyone opened up a CZ-1, and knows how to access the wheels? Any tips or pointers?

I will definitely have another go, but I thought it would be best to ask the folks here before blindly going in...

Thanks,

Jim

Hey, Jim,

why not to use Service Manual for CZ1? I send you it in PM...

Good luck with your repair, I guess it shouldn't be so difficult to
fix it.

Hi. Very sorry for my delayed reply - I actually thought my message hadn't been posted, so I left it for a while. :-\ Thanks for the replies.

Daniel - I'd love to see the CZ-1 service manual, but unfortunately I can't figure out how to PM you on Yahoo groups. Can I post my Yahoo email address in a message?

Thanks.
Jim

Hi, Jim,

I don't know which mail software or setting you have, I see address of sender in each message I got from yahoo group - in mail program in column "From", and in the message itself - first in header, second in "Posted by:".

Also I can use parameter "Long Header" to see all details about sender.

I send you SM in PM.

Happy New Year!

On a slightly related note, I opened up my CZ-1 a couple days ago and cleaned my troublesome relay instead of replacing it which I've been meaning to do. I even went and ordered a replacement relay many months ago but never got up the nerve to subject my CZ-1 to my amateurish soldering skills. Here's a video that helped me somewhat: it at least shows how to open a CZ-1 up and how to clean a relay. I had complete success in under a half hour with some Deoxit and some small pieces of paper as applicators/scrubbing tools. If your chorus slider is noisy and the audio distorts or cuts out on channels you may need to clean your relay. I had thought that my AD converter needed calibrating in addition to replacing or cleaning the relay which it still might but after fixing the relay the audio path is so much cleaner that I don't hear the nasty transients that I thought were coming from the AD converter. This problem seems to be very common with the CZ line. I checked my CZ 5000 after fixing the CZ-1 but it has no relay troubles at all. Now I need to find some cool patches after 25 years or so of the same old stuff. PT

Thanks for posting this. Always helpful to have a video.

If you need patches, check out the VirtualCZ a very fine CZ emulation/librarian -- now (12-31-14) on sale

http://www.pluginboutique.com/product/4-Synth/1158-VirtualCZ

It also "opens up a CZ-1"!

Many thanks Daniel. Unfortunately, I use Yahoo Groups with a browser (Chrome) and I still can't see anything related to PMs on here. Nothing happens when I click on your user name either. If it's not too much trouble, would you mind sending it to my Yahoo email?

device.monkey@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks again,
Jim

Hi, Jim,

I understand, there are more ways, some don't show mail addresses.
No problem, I have sent files once more.

All the best.
