Sick CZ-1

Sick CZ-1

2002-05-17 by fredhaskey

My CZ-1 is sick. I turned it on for the first time in a long time
and it would appear to have some problem in the output cicuitry.
If I play sustained notes (organ, for example) the sound will come up
to volume and remain played. Sounds with a fast attack and decay
hardly sound at all. There is some noise (static) as well. Anyone
else experience this? Anyone know of a fix? I'd hate to have to
dump my first real keyboard after all these years... (bought it in
82/82 or so for 800!!! (My first electonic keyboard was the VL-Tone,
anyone remember the 'German Folk Tune'?) Thanks.

John, not sure on the best way to fix your CZ myself. But I do know that
there are some repair shops in the US that do work on CZ's and apparently
the parts are still available from Casio so the chances are good that you
could get it repaired. There's a place called C.M.O.S. electronics in Glen
Lyon PA that comes to mind that patches up old casio gear. Don' t know
their contact info right off the top of my head but if you're interested I
could dig it up.

Hi John,
First you should do a little trouble shooting.
What you describe could just be scrambled patches.
Try the organ patch again, then hold the "Initalize"
red button on the upper right hand panel, while again
entering the patch number. (E-1, or whatever). This will
temporarily write the original sound stored in ROM from
that patch location.
If the sound is now right, you can do a system reset to
restore the factory patches. This is done by powering on
the CZ-1 while holding down the "Initalize" button. Then
while still holding the button down, pressing the "Yes"
button. All patches on a CZ-1 are stored in RAM and if
the battery gets week, these can get scrambled. The sounds
you have described, could simply be the settings of the
envelope generators. Especially if the sounds are sustaning
after releasing the keys.
If the test for scrambled patches does not remedy the
problem, the relay in the amplifier board may be at fault.
This can be replaced by any tech.

Hope this helps,
Terry (The Casio Kid)
