CZ5000 Sequencer data

CZ5000 Sequencer data

2017-01-14 by Sean Plaw

Hi, I used to own a CZ5000 synth in the 80's/90's and used the sequencer to create a number of songs. All these songs were saved down to cassette via the MT cable. The question I have is, is there any CZ5000 Sequencer emulation software that would enable me to load these old data sequences so that I could retrieve the sequences to use in a modern sequencer. I have considered buying a 2nd hand CZ5000 purely to load the sequences into and then play them over midi into a modern sequencer. However, trying to find a decent CZ5000 these days is quite difficult.....plus they are getting more expensive. Any suggestions welcome on how I could retrieve my old CZ5000 sequences for use again today.
Many thanks
Sean

I don't know if such software exists, with very high probability not.
I suppose Casio didn't publish how music data are coded in Tape signal.

Then you can try to find somebody with CZ5000 and rent it for the job.
Or ask somebody to do conversion for you.

Good luck!

Copy the cassette to CD. Find someone with a 5000 to send it to, who'll load it, make a MIDI file, and send it back.Rig

Hi Steve,

Sorry, none of my recent posts appear to be being publisted! If this gets through would you mind testing the Wav > CZ > SMF for one of my sequences please (link below).

Sorry guys, all my posts from the last few days appear to have hit at once - assuming as I'm I new member to this group. Some are duplicates as I thought I was doing something wrong.
Cheers

I will try playing it into the CZ-5000 from the dropbox player this afternoon and will get back to you.

Just to let you know--this morning I tried the wac2cas program, but you wav file wasn't recognized. I had that happen a few days ago when I had too much non-FSK header tone at the start of the wave file. So I tried Sony Soundblast Sound Forge (audio editing program), but your wav wouldn't load (several times). I think the error message was like non-RIFF format. So that's when I discovered dropbox had a player. And yes, I heard the hum from the original recording!!

I will try the dropbox player -> CZ this afternoon. Unfortunately, since I can't load it into the Sound Forge, if the hum is an issue, I won't be able to try to clean up the audio. The Knut Roll-Lund TRS-80 bundle from the RZ-1 hack site had a recent version of audacity--which I haven't used in years, so that might come in handy.

I tried to leave a comment in drop box, but since I don't have an account t, I couldn't. Hope you don't might talking about the process here.

If you need some help... send me the wav file and I will make it loadable.

Hi Steve, thanks for trying. Happy to continue discussion here or to put the file in a different location. Are you trying to load the data via the MT cable or do you have a different process? Keen to know as all the CZ5000's i've seen on eBay no longer have the MT Cable with them.
Cheers

Yeah--I have my original MT cable, but that tinyloops site has a nice write up (with pictures and drawings) on how to make your own. I did a little more research on FSK and it looks like there are newer uses than 1980s cassette data tapes. Still no Casio FSK to midi converters, though!!

Looking at the tinyloops site and taking into account the comment about the Service Manual being incorrect in its labelling of the input/output pins it would appear the MT Cable follows the MSX Cassette standard....if it does hopefully this might work...
