Yes, exactly.  'CC' refers to 'Continous Controllers', which just means 
parameters in the Evolver can be controlled from external MIDI knobs, 
faders, or sliders.  These can be either a different hardware device, or 
a computer program like Logic.

Not as far as I can tell.  In order to load the new OS, you'll need the 
new chip.  I think, however, that you can load the patches without the 
new chip.  I'm sure someone will correct me if this isn't true.
