Evolver update Explained in NOOBY talk

Evolver update Explained in NOOBY talk

2005-08-17 by hodsonmonster

Hello people, I havnt posted very much on this group before, but i must tell you it has
helped me a lot and inspired me further.

I wondered if anyone is willing to explain in NOOBY language what the upgrade offers?

I.e. - What does it mean by CC controllers... does this mean i can use a MIDI fader in Logic
Audio (for example) and assign it to a MIDI channel and it will control the feedback or the
OSC pitch etc etc etc?

Can I just download the OS from the website and put it on my Evolver (desktop) and take
advantage of the new patches without the new chipset?

Sorry to sound so glum but I would appreciate some more info. Obviuosly I have read the
website but I cant make head nor tail as to coming to a conclusion to my two questions.

Many many thanks

- Matt

Yes, exactly. 'CC' refers to 'Continous Controllers', which just means
parameters in the Evolver can be controlled from external MIDI knobs,
faders, or sliders. These can be either a different hardware device, or
a computer program like Logic.

Not as far as I can tell. In order to load the new OS, you'll need the
new chip. I think, however, that you can load the patches without the
new chip. I'm sure someone will correct me if this isn't true.

Yes. You can't adress not every sound parameter in the Evolver though. A
list of the parameters that can be controlled via Midi CC is contained in
the zip-file on the DSI site.

No, afaik you can't load the new OS to your Evolver, in addition to the
software update the hardware must be updated by exchanging an IC.
You can load the new sounds though. Some might sound quite strange because
in opposite to the new operating system, that switches off all sequencer
parameters if the sequencer's not running, Evolvers with the old OS apply
the values of sequencer step 1 to a sound. If a sound plays with a very high
pitch or something like that you might try to set the sequencer values of
step 1 to zero.

Regards

Stefan

Saving/Loading PEK Patches

2005-08-17 by Eric Lawson

Does the new PEK update have new patches? If so, how can I load
them and also save my current banks with my own custom tweaks? I
don't own any fancy PC interface. I do have the Evolver CD-Rom that
came with my PER, but have never used it.

I'm not well-versed in patch management on the PEK, so if someone
can give me a step-by-step, that would be most helpful.

Also, please confirm that there is a new patch bank - how different
are these from the ones loaded in my PEK???

Thanks,
Eric

Re: [Evolver] Evolver update Explained in NOOBY talk

2005-08-17 by mr julian

well you CAN control the V1 and 2 evolvers via a very well thought out, and
comprehensively featured MIDI SysEx setup, but if you just want to hook in a
few knobs on any sort of basic controller surface, hardware or software, and
use it to tweak standard parameters on the synth, then you probably want the
new OS. Which merans a software update via MIDI, as well as a processor
update.

The other really cool thing the new evolver OS does is disconnecting the
internal sequencer when it's not running. This is a good thing, because
depending on what you do with the first note of a sequence, the default
"sound" and pitch of a patch would always change. (if you're like me and are
more likely to make a sound before coming up with a sequence to automate it,
this was pretty annoying) Oh, and it would get confusing if you were playing
with the sequencer, would stop it to play the evolver by MIDI, without
resetting it, and all of a sudden it would be a totally different sound!

LFO sync was described a few weeks ago, and that sounds like a cool feature
too!

Anyway. yes, there's a whole new set of polyevolver keyboard programs that
Dave supplied with the update, that seem to be quite good, from what others
have said about them! you can try these out, but depending on the sequences
they come with they will also sound a little funny on a V2 evolver. (me, I
need to dump off all my current work to the computer before I can try them
out anyway)

Actually tt seems the upgrade is hardware and OS dependant on what your
current OS or current hardware actually is. Refer to this link on Dave's
website. My PER needed the chip upgrade and it is fairly easy to do if you
can operate a screwdriver.

DSI sends a tool specifically for pulling the chips- it was so easy even I did it without any problems!

a piece of cake
