Programming sequencer with midi keyboard

Programming sequencer with midi keyboard

2003-08-04 by rickyannotta

Has anyone run across this scenario? Sometimes I'll just be playing
Evolver with my PCR-50 midi keyboard, checking out presets and stuff
and I'll come across something cool, like a bassline for example, and
I'll decide to create a sequence. So I will set set SEQ 1
destination to control all frequencies. Then I will hold the
sequencer button down until it blinks (enabling Evolver sequencer to
be programmed via midi keyboard) and press Sequence #1. Basic Stuff..

Then I'll go to "key in" my sequence, but the pitch will be
transposed up like 5 octaves. So there goes my bassline! Then I fudge
with the Key Off/Transpose parameters, which sometimes doesn't let me
transpose back to my original sound. This has happened to me a many
times, but not always - Is there a reason for this? Don't know if
I'm working "wrong" with the Evolver or if it's some bug or
something.

Any help would be appreciated!
-Rick

Have you got your osc pitchs tuning set very high to
start with? If you have writen a med-low range bass
line on your evolver and all your seq values are under
36 then chances are your osc tunings are set fairly
high.
I've done similar a thing and after checking the the
usual suspects like instrument and keyboard transpose
to find I had osc tuning set at c5 or something
stupidly high like that.
Now imagine what the hairs in your ear canal would
look like if you made the same mistake with a h/p lead
line!

I'll have to check the OSC tunings next time it happens. That
probably is the culprit. I still don't see why going into sequencer
mode would bring about these changes(when using a midi keyboard). In
terms of workflow, it can be frustrating as it happens quite a bit.

Unless...when setting Seq 1 destination to control all frequecies I'm
activating Oscillators with higher pitches that weren't being
triggered in play mode. That doesn't make sense to me either.

I hope it's not a bug in the OS or a problem with my Evolver,
although my first guess is that I'm still trying get my head 'round
Evolver's modular style architecture.

Any ideas on this would be appreciated!
Many Thanks,

-Rick
