BRAND New Evolver problems:(

BRAND New Evolver problems:(

2003-08-27 by deranka

Greetings,

Just got an Evolver, and somehow, banks 1 and 2 have emptied themselves! I
plugged in the unit at my friends house, and bank 1 was ready to go. hit start,
everythings fine. Unplug the unit, drive back home, plug it in, and bank 1 and bank
2 are empty! No sequencer movement or clip led indicator. Switch to bank 3 and a
few patches are playable. I repacked the evolvder in the container it was sent with,
including the foam brackets. I don't understand how I cou;d have erased thosebanks
but I guess i did.

Now, is there anyway I can restore the factory settings. If not how do I reload the
patches?

Sorry for the basic question, but I'm a little anxious right now.

Regards,
Stephan

Hi Stephan,

Spooky stuff eh? So Bank 3 is still alive? All is
not lost! Could be one of those freak things, try
reloading before you really start to fret (no not the
guitar again)

[I shot the comedian we can continue]

If you want to load the factory patchs, get the sysex
from the dsi site and dump it from your sequencer.
Simple affair, just load the file to your sequencer
and press play, the evolver should recognise the data,
and the bank will put itself into position
automaticly.

I haven't done this with my evolver yet, and usually
there is a device id setting which needs to be set,
but I assume the evolver has a default setting of 0,
if you need to set a target id on your sequencer, (my
latest doesn't have this).

maybe i'm stating the obvious, but maybe you accidentally turned the
internal midi clock to off so pushing "start" wouldn't cause any
movement of the sequencer anymore and no sound...

Well, I ended p calling DSI and talked to Dave. He went through some steps like
making sure the MIDI clock was set correctly, as well as some other parameters. It
did not seem to work. Then I lost Bank 3 as wel! So he is sending me a new board,
and I'm sending mine back when I get.

Great support, got to say. He was patient and polite, and when he exhausteed his
possible solutions to the problem, he immedietly suggested sending a new board
overnight. Awesome!

I did get the banks to return twice, horribly distorted, even with the volume runed
down, but I unplugged and replugged the unit and the banks disappeared again.

Thanks for the suggestions though!!

D.

[Evolver] Power Switch

speaking of which....it always kind of bugs me that the Evolver doesn't
have a power switch. what's up with that? are a lot of synths like that?
becuase I don't have a vast experience with a ton of synths, but I've
never seen any others like that.

It bugged me a little bit, too, at first. Then I did a reality
check... I have power switches on almost every other piece of
music/audio gear. I asked myself how often I use those switches. My
answer? Never. Everything is plugged into heavy duty power strips,
which have their own on/off switches. The power strips, in turn, are
plugged into a pair of 500-VA UPS's, which also have on/off
switches. I use the switches on the power strips to turn everything
on and off.

Leaving the power switch off the Evolver saved some cost, complexity,
and space. Did it save a LOT? No, but all those little things add
up, and I'm quite happy with the very low cost, simplicity, and small
size of the Evolver. I think that the vast majority of the
compromises and design decisions that Dave made on the Evolver were
excellent.

Re: [Evolver] Re: Power Switch

the power strip with on/off switchs a good solution,
another, more convenient one is a little rocker switch
unit that has a socket for the power pack jack and a
lead to go to your evolver. The ones I have seen are
not too short, but short enough to not cause a long
reach from your synth. I am planning to get a few
when I sell my V3 midi splitter (any one need one,
hint, hint).
