Thanks - ski !!! Thanks for all the hard work - it's incredible. The patches are great. Thanks everybody! Some very interesting stuff going on. I will definately be deconstructing a bunch of the patches to see what makes em tick. The presentation blew me away. I feel like I've just received a triple album boxed set that I had ordered and had been waiting for. :) I downloaded the set at 11:00am It's now 3:00pm I've played all the patches COOL Now maybe I can go get some lunch. over & out - Robert

Thanks Robert! Glad you're enjoying it. Of course, if you weren't, I'd have to point out that you're partially to blame! ;) You're "Endless Org" sequence is very trick. I never did go back to check the math in your claim that it takes 43,680 steps to repeat, however! :D Ski www.ex5tech.com EX5Tech Evolver forum: http://www.ex5tech.com/ex5ubb_cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=23 --- In DSI_Evolver@yahoogroups.com, Robert Shanks <synthlab@n...> wrote: > Thanks - ski !!! > > Thanks for all the hard work - it's incredible. I've been listening for more than an hour to only the first bank. Wow, very high quality sounds with good use of the controllers. Many thanx to all programmers. Grtz. Ronald.

Hey, glad you're enjoying it! I'm STILL enjoying it. My current favorite that I've spent a lot of time listening to is Swanoid's "Evo Pluck" in slot A117. Outstanding! There are so many others, though, too. Ronald, if you've made it through the sequences in Bank A, there's another half bank of 64 sequences in Bank C waiting for you. My favorite there is "The Evolutionary" in C062-C064, which is what I used to make the demo mp3. Have fun, and thanks! Very hard to pick but there is an awesome tube-overdriven lead (can't
remember the numbe) that I couldn't stop playing....
And some sequences that really, really impressed.

Ski, I just wanted to add into the chorus of "thanks!!!" I haven't had a chance to listen to the sounds yet as I've got a gig in saturday I'm furiously preparing for, and not really wanting to distract myself too much. This looks like it'll take days to go through when I get the chance! Also, a huge thanks to all the people who prepared and submitted patches. Put me down for a bunch next time (Though I still need to pull my finger out and sort through to figure out which patches I have here are all mine, and which ones are similar edits of factory patches... one of the main reasons I didn't submit anything this time) I do have one quick question - I read the liecense section of the PDF, and it says: "you may freely use evolutionaries sounds in any non-commercial music or performance. Commercial use of evolutionaries requires permission from the author(s) and Dave Smith" umm... does this mean, if, say, I find a sound or two in there I like and want to use in a track for the album I'm currently working on, that I need to ask if I can use it? julian

I have spent some hours and hours with the new soundset and I found a lot of great things and great starting places for new patches. Ski you have done a wonderful job and I know that you likely contributed the majority of the patches. The sequences you did in Bank C are first rate and lots of fun!! Very Inspiring! Now I must complete part 2 of tempus fugit . . . Ravi

Thanks for the kind words, Julian. Regarding that "license" wording in the pdf... um, I have to admit that I did a God-awful job of that. I was trying to accomplish a couple of things (like making it clear that Dave had the right to use the sounds in the presets), and I just totally botched the language. Ravi brought me to my senses. I'm chalking it up to lack of sleep, as I started the final session on "Evolutionaries" early Saturday morning, and didn't finish posting it until about 4 or 5 am Sunday morning. Anyway... we're redrafting that awful "license", and will repost the whole thing soon. I really didn't mean to restrict commercial use of the patches, and I think I'm fair in saying that no one else did, either. Just my goof. The *original* sequences are a slightly touchier matter, as is anything that actually makes it into the Evolver presets. Hang on, and we'll get an updated - and hopefully much more sensible! - doc out soon. Thanks a lot. Thanks Ravi! I didn't contribute the majority, though. I just did Bank C, and a few "fillers" in Bank A and B so that they'd be complete. I didn't really intend to do an entire bank. It just kind of happened all the sudden. I actually have about a dozen or so "leftovers"! Rest assured, though, that ALL patches/sequences submitted by the other twelve authors were all used. I think this "Evolutionaries" thing is bringing people out of the closet! Well, you know what I mean... All of the sudden, there's new stuff coming out of the woodwork! Phono has posted some patches, Gary has upped his patch renaming utility, and there's that "Art Pack" thingie from some clown. Also... Swanoid has sent me a fantastic surprise that I'm going to try to post next week! BTW, I'm really starting to get into your "Who's Who?" sequence in A078. I REALLY like those "Hipnotic" and "Hipnotica" patches, too. Great stuff! Also, are you REALLY programming the next bar in Temput Fugit?! :) Funny how that sequence turned out. Even though the notes in that bass riff are all correct, it's difficult to recognize the song because of all the "Evolverish" stuff happening on top. From: "ski_ex5tech" <ex5tech@...> > Hang on, and we'll get an updated - and hopefully much more > sensible! - doc out soon. > hey thanks ski. Whatever you guys choose to do with the licensing is fair enough, though it just makes a bit of a difference to how we end users get to enjoy them. I'm sure somewhere in all those patches, I'll find some synth sounds that I want to use as is, or with just the tiniest bit of tweaking... It would be nice to just be able to use them.. :-) Sequences, on the other hand....... I'm not 100% sure about what to do with sequences.. I mean, even the ones that are part of the presets of the evolver... The thing is, a sequence could also count as a recorded musical performance if someone wanted to get all legal and stuff... I guess it would be even more so with the "multitimbral" sequences that do melody/chord or counterpoint... (not that I'd feel comfortable using something like that from someone else as the basis for a song anyway though) at the very least though, the tricky sequences are great to examine and play around with... Does anyone know what are the legalities with things like pattern presets in roland grooveboxes? I'm sure a company like roland would have already worked this sort of thing out. The answer is probably sitting tucked away at the start of someone's mc303 manual.... :-) julian

Thanks Mr. J. Barring unforeseen problems, we'll be posting a revised copy of "Evolutionaries" this Saturday. The revised edition will contain license text that is greatly "relaxed". It will also have some much needed fixes to a few of Gary's sequences, which accidentally didn't contain Clock Div and BPM settings. You make a good point regarding sequences that are melodic and/or otherwise "song like". It is a tougher situation, but we're making it pretty easy in the new license. Speaking only for myself... as a user, I'm with you; I'd never really want to take someone else's sequence and base "my own" song on it. On the other hand, as the programmer/composer of some of the Evolver presets and Evolutionaries sequences, I'd love it if someone liked one of my sequences enough that they'd be interested in collaborating together to turn it into a full length song. That would be a blast! :) Time... time... we all need more time! ;) Ski www.ex5tech.com EX5Tech Evolver forum: http://www.ex5tech.com/ex5ubb_cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=23 --- In DSI_Evolver@yahoogroups.com, "mr julian" <jujulilianan@h...> wrote: > From: "ski_ex5tech" <ex5tech@e...> > > > Hang on, and we'll get an updated - and hopefully much more > > sensible! - doc out soon. > > > hey thanks ski. I finally had time to try the Sysex Utility for MacOS9 *SysEx480*, and after a few adjustments i was able to load the Evolutionaries in to my Evo (and save my own programs). Easy and pratical utility. I want to thank everyone who participated and shared their patches/seq with this forum. I was amazed by the quality and diversity of all the programs. I'm fairly new the synth world and this will help me learn a lot faster. Thanks again Evolverers, it's greatly appreciated. I hope to share my programs for the Evolutionaries 2004. And a big thank you to Ski who put it all that together ! Now back to my new Z.Vex FuzzFactory who sounded like my Waldorf XT this afternoon ;) Simon on 31/08/03 7:31 AM, ski_ex5tech at ex5tech@... wrote: Phew! Finally done, and I'm whipped. Hey, great! Glad the little SysEx utility for Mac OS9 worked out OK. I don't have a Mac anymore, so that's very good to know. Glad you're enjoying the sounds, too. Regarding "learning a lot faster"... The people here in the Evolver Yahoo group and at EX5Tech will help you a lot. I'd also recommend reading some resources on the basics of analog subtractive synthesis. This will give you the foundation you need for working with just about any synthesizer. In particular, I'd recommend digging up the back issues of Keyboard magazine that contained a series of columns by Peter Gorges (of Wizoo) called "SoundForum". Peter wrote an excellent series on the basics of subtractive synthesis, plus, there was a FREE little "SoundForum" softsynth from Peter, Native Instruments, and Keyboard. The "SoundForum" soft synth is based on Reaktor technology, is very easy to use, sounds great, and even has an onscreen oscilloscope so that you can see your waveforms! You can contact Keyboard mag for the back issues. If you can't find the "SoundForum" soft synth, let me know, and I'll tell you how to find it at www.ampfea.org. Also with regards to dissecting existing Evolver patches... I have a utility coming soon that will open Evolver SysEx patch files and display all the information for a patch on a single well organized screen. I've been super busy at work, but I'm going to get Mr. Rock and Noision1 (and maybe one or two others) to test it soon. I'll post a screen shot in the EX5Tech Evolver forum as soon as I get a chance, too. Thanks. (although I'm not the person you were replying to, this info will help me as well.) BTW, I did a google search for "peter gorges soundforum" and the May 2001 article came up, complete with a download for the software. if you then add "june" (and subsequent months) to the search phrase, you can find the later articles. this way, you don't have to buy the keyboard mag back issues :-) Thanks again! Thanks Ski ! I bought the first synth more than 2 years ago ( Waldorf XT), and althought i have created really interesting patches (for me at least) i still don't know exactly what i'm doing all the time. I pretty much always get what i'm looking for, but often i work double shift just to get there :) I think it's time now to learn more technical stuff to find my way around faster and smarter. And thanks for the KB mag info, Simon on 19/09/03 10:25 AM, ski_ex5tech at ex5tech@... wrote: Hey, great!
