(OT)waldorf xt VS virus classic rack.

(OT)waldorf xt VS virus classic rack.

2003-09-12 by peter

hi.
i nead advice on what synth to buy.
for the same ammount of money i got a virus(b) rack, or a waldorf xt.
i listen to virus and the sound from that synth is amazing!
but it has no knobs like xt got plenty of.
but i use soundiver for all my gear exept evolver.
i also use stepsequesers for all my gear so the send realtime messages from
xt..wont be that missed..
so what it comes down to is the sound..
virus got 24bit and xt has 20bit..
any knowledge/thoughts is mush welcome.
peace out
peter

Hi Peter!

They are very different sounding synths. The Virus series is VA, the
XT is Wavetable. The XT can do some nice VA style sounds, but the
Virus is much better with a broader sound pallet in that department.
The XT can do some very unique distorted wavetable type sounds that
are very unique and inspiring.

If you already have several VA synths (I can't remember what you
have) then the XT might be an interesting choice for you. If you are
looking for the big VA sound that the Virus can do then the XT
probably is not a very good choice for you.

The Virus you are talking about is the 1U version, not the Virus b
tabletop, right? I suggest you consider the tabletop Virus b version
over the 1U rack. The interface really does make a huge difference
in using the synth.

Whatever U do, peter, don't buy the XT. Much like Clavia with the
Nord Modular, Waldorf discontinued the XT's in favor of the Q's, and
with this the manufacture of all parts for the XT. My XT blew a
circuit board 6 weeks after I bought it, and it's been sitting in a
repair shop now for 5 months waiting for a circuit board that may or
may not appear from herr motherland. No word from W as to when It'll
get fixed (but they sent me a "loaner" Q Rack for my trouble--GREAT
customer support.) So stick with the Virus, or check out the Q rack,
for it has nice wavetable parameters and a PPG Wave LP filter to
boot. Jimbo

If you are talking about older Virus rack, I think it is a cut down
version of Virus b. Less note polyphony, 2 osc instead of 3, etc..
May still be a cool synth, but you might want to check the comparison
chart before you head to a store.

Good luck!

its a virus classic rack.
yupp it has only 16part poly and two osc per voice..
but multitimbral 8parts. and as many
filters/waveforms(64) as the big brothers..and the
sound..its amazing!
why are they sooo expensive!!

Peter -

Where do you live that prices are so high. Here in the US you can
get a used Virus b for $750. Are you getting these price quotes from
a dealer, because they sound very high. Have you checked online
classifieds in your part of the world?

Hope you find what you are loking for!
