Poly evolver thoughts

Poly evolver thoughts

2003-09-25 by Richard

I would like a poly evolver attempted to hit a similar price and portabilty
point to the current model rather than competing with the Alesis A6 or
something - hence leave off the keyboard!

I would love it if the poly version carried on the evolver tendency of being
primarily a very complex sequencer which can be also used as a keyboard type
synth, rather than like most synths, a keyboard synth with a sequencer
tacked on as an afterthoought. I would like to put in my 2 cents that a poly
version MUST have an LED and knob for each sequence step so you know where
you are - it may seem a small thing but its huge to me.

the fact that the evolver has all this sequencer modulation possibilty means
that I cannot imagine not having one for sequencing. The fact that it has
the FASTEST midi repsonse I've ever come across (as fast as the Akai
EVW2000 - which runs on CV!) means I need another to use as a windsynth - if
I could do both in the one box I'd be a happy chappie. I'd also like two
midi ins and outs so the sequencer could be addressed completely separately
by a midi controller while you could play a melodic line on another patch
using a keyboard or breath controller.

For my uses the abilty to play big chords are less important than the idea
of having four or eight evolvers in one box - I believe the sequencing
possibilties of that could generate completely new genres of music!

Richard

Richard - Excellent comments all! The only thing that I would add to
the issues you raised is that I would actually like a keyboard model -
but of course, not at the expense of the sequencer - I want it all!
Ideally, Dave could offer a tabletop AND a keyboard version, in the
manner of the Access Virus. If I had to guess, though, I think he'll
opt for the simpler and less expensive approach of a tabletop version
only.

BTW, I think the last statement in your message below is nothing
short of PROPHETic. (Believe it or not, I really didn't intend to
make a pun when I first wrote that sentence!)

Re: Poly evolver thoughts

Heh, I never know whether I want a keyboard a not; sure they raise the
cost and make the box a lot more unwieldy, and sometimes you get a
crappy keyboard, but OTOH, boy it's handy to have a keyboard.

It probably does make the most sense to at least initially release a
keyboard-less module, especially given Dave's apparent business strategy
so far.

Though I agree with the previous poster that it'd be great to basically
have the ability to do what N evolvers could do, I hope Dave doesn't
forget about the `big chords'! Even the cheapo Prophets (P600) seem
like awesome pad machines, and I'd love to have a modern version...

Well... IF Dave happened to be making a keyboardless model, guys like
us that really want a keyboard could always go get one of the many
little lightweight inexpensive keyboard controllers that are now
available.

Miles, I'm a little confused by one comment you made. You said:

"Though I agree with the previous poster that it'd be great to

Dave doesn't forget about the `big chords'!"

I don't understand... Could you not play "big chords" with the power
of several Evolvers? Also... Imagine the possibilities of different
sounds on each of the individual notes in those big chords! Not to
mention multiple sequencers - one for each "EE" ("Evolver
Equivalent")! Of course, you can buy several Evolvers now and "poly-
chain" them together. It would be cooler, though, to be able to get
the equivalent in one tidy, cost effective package, without having to
MIDI a bunch of Evolvers together, don't you think?

Yeah, but those usually suck _big_ time (you'd think someone would make
a nice one, but every single one I've tried, without exception, has
been truly awful). You get what you pay for I suppose.

Sure, I'm thinking more of various little details that might be good to
pay attention too for a polyphonic synth. For instance:

  * Making sure it has a reasonable voice-stealing algorithm.

  * Having the ability to detune individual voices in a chord (all using
the same patch) from each other.

  * Working out the details of how LFOs work in chords -- on some synths
you can select between having per-voice LFOs and a single `mono' LFO
that applies to all voices on the same channel (it would be handy to
be able to choose this _per_ LFO). Of course this point also
    applies to sequencers...

  etc.

These are things that I think really do help, but are sort of hard to do
for `chained monophonic' synths (like multiple evolvers).

Oh, I am... :-)
