cases and stands

2003-12-12 by mbc0920

hey what kind of cases do you all use to transport your evolver and other gear in? I'm
sick of wrapping my controllers and synths up in towels and throwing them in bags...
there has to be a better way that isn't too insanely expensive. Maybe some sort of
case that has that pluck to fit foam, but isn't as expensive as pelican cases, etc. Any
links or suggestions that I should check out? Also, what kind of stands do you all
perform with? I have a bunch of small toys that I use live (powerbook, evolver, nord
micro modular, oxygen8, peavey pc1600x, small mixer, effects pedals, etc.), I've been
thinking about getting a double keyboard stand and some planks of wood. I play in a
band, so I prefer to stand up rather than sit down at a table with my comp and
synths. Is there a cheaper method than the $100 keyboard stand and wood planks
that's still somewhat sturdy? Thanks

I use two things... I've got an M-Audio studio pack for my powerbook,
audio interface, small mixer, cables, tea bags, caffeinated mints,
jbirds, etc.

I've also got this camera bag... it's well padded with ceramic inserts
on the bottom and sides to resist punctures. I bought a ton of that
dense gray packing foam, and essentially made a custom carrier which
holds my evolver, drum machine and a couple other small pieces of kit.
It's about the same size as a sport bag / duffel bag.

I'd recommend this route... it takes a little planning, but it's
rewarding in the end. Find a big bag store and find a sturdy camera
bag that's got "one big pocket" and customize.

I can't speak highly enough of the m-audio studio pack either... it's
so much space, and so rugged. Not exactly clandestine though...

I haven't yet figured out what the heck I'm going to do about
transportation of the monomachine. Weird shape + semi-delicate seeming
joystick = pretty custom bag requirements.

me too, man. I've been transporting it in its cardboard box for now.
which is tedious to pack/unpack and doesn't offer much protection.

and yes, the joystick is pretty delicate; I've already replaced mine.

I've been looking around for different options. the best I've come up
with is the Pelican 1750 (for about $160-ish) and a straight-up ATA
flight case for $250. the Pelican is better because its cheaper and
keeps moisture out (which is good in humid-as-hell Ohio where I live),
but the foam is not the pull-and-pluck type. so it will take a bit of
work to get something to shape around that joystick. the ATA case would
be custom made to fit the synth (including joystick cutouts), but is
heavier and costs much more.

hmmm.....what to do....

please let me (and the Elektron-users group) know if you come up with
something :-)

I've got two Dj cases.
One for records and one for a turntable.
The one for the records can hold the evolver, kaoss pad II, Macky
mixer and machinedrum. I use grey pyramid foam to put between the
gear so it won't damage each other.
I'm still searching a solution for the Monomachine too!

Ronald.

Another alternative could be to transport some of your equipment in a
mixer case or guitar pedal case lined with a velcro bed. A used mixer
case or guitar pedal case should be resonably priced and transporting
in such would save time setting up. Another concern to consider is
that of attaching velcro to your beloved toys. The adhesive on the
velcro isn't particularly reliable and removing it is even more
fustrating. So what I've done for a bunch of guitar pedals was to run
some plastic cable ties through the velcro and then attach the cable
around the unit. For larger units you'll need to chain a couple of
ties together, as well as, have enough velcro to cover the necessary
surface area of the unit. I'll admit it seems a bit of extra work
just to get everything setup but it does hold together somewhat
nicely and it is better then having that yucky adhesive stuck to the
pedal.

You may also want to look at rifle cases. They may be too thin for some of
the taller gear, but they're nice and wide.

And you're less likely to be hassled by hooligans on the subway when
carrying a case that says "Winchester" on the side...
