You need to change the parameters MIDI Rec and MIDI Xmit to from "Pro" to
"All" or "Par".

Hello all, I'm trying to record an automation of the evolver filter on
Cubase SX 2.0 but the only thing that I can record by midi at this moment is
program change messages. With my other synths I can do it without problems.
Any help with this?
Thanks and regards.

Thanks for your answer, I have both parameters set to "All".
Has anybody tried to record filter automations succesfully?
Any other sugest?

Thanks and Regards.

Miguel.

It seems that evolver only sends parameter changes as SysEx. Most synths use
control changes.

If cubase is recording other synth automation, but not evolver's, I'd
suggest cubase needs to be configured to record SysEx

Ok, you are right, Cubase was filtering the SysEx. Thanks a lot for your
help.
The problem is that is much more difficult to edit the automation than a
control change one, don't you think so?

Best.
Miguel.

Yes,

I was a bit disappointed to find there was no setup for CC messaging on the
evolver. This is something I hope can come in a future OS update.

For now, you may like to assign mod wheel, breath, foot controller to
mod destinations - much easier to edit. It would be sweet to have cc
implementation, though...

The problem is, there are 128 parameters just on the symth side of
evolver..... which would leave no room for the normal CCs that everyone
wants to use (vol, pan, mod, etc - which evolver DOES handle, by the way)
And what about CCs for the sequencer?? that would also be cool.....

So in order to use CCs, you'd need to go with NRPNs anyway. and in that
case, you may as well be using SysEx, in my opinion....

Though maybe a couple of CCs hardwired to the main synth parameters would be
nice.... you could do a fair bit with envelope controls, LFO frequency and
amount, filter cutoff, res, and env, and oscillator frequency, fine, shape,
and level. oh, and the feedback and delay stuff..... that would take up
what, 60-something of the free CC parameters?

That said, I'm a bit hesitant to ask for this as an OS upgrade.. I think it
would actually be a bit of a pain for Dave to do... he'd have to hook the
new code into his existing software, in parallel with the SysEx stuff...so
also some arbitration between the blocks of code needed, more processing
required, more load on the processor, more chance to create strange bugs.
And for what? all you need to do to make it work right now is override the
default MIDI mode of cubase....

I'd rather see what else dave has in mind after the poly evolver.

Not every parameter needs to come with an assigned CC. Like most synths
these days, each parameter can have a user assigned CC. Even the JP8000,
one of the early analog emulation synths has assignable CC's for all it's
parameters.

Not with the setup above...

Again as above, I don't NEED every parameter to have a CC assigned to it.
Just the ones I want to record, edit, automate in a software sequencer, to
which I could assign any CC I wanted to it.

I can't comment on what kind of work would go into implementing CC control
messages since I know nothing of programming. But your solution to just
turn off Sysex filtering is not a solution. I lose the ability to make
quick, easy edits b/c I'm dealing with sysex and not CC messages in the
sequencer. I lose the ability to easily draw in my own control parameters
into a midi automation track.
