Anyone run a guitar through the Evolver?

Anyone run a guitar through the Evolver?

2004-04-27 by rickyannotta

Just curious if anyone does this, and what practical applications if
any...I know I should just try it, but I've been busy learning lots
of other stuff in my little studio and haven't gotten around to it
yet.

I've run my bass through it with some cool results :)

Has anyone had problems with the input level being too high for a
guitar amp, or any buzzing due to interference?

Bass guitar...That sounds interesting, especially since I've just
purchased a new one! I'd imagine the Evo would sound cool with a
bass - Add some distorted "growl" to it!

Do I just plug into one of the inputs and that it?

Yah once it's hooked up and your patch is in external input mode, it
will use the red leds that denote row etc as a level input meter.
Gotta crank it a bit since the sound isn't pre-amped.. ;)

If you still have your original bank 3, then you can try patches 20-
20 (I think) which were the presets created with guitar in mind.

I think those guitar presets are okay but they could use some help. Even though that is
one of the last things the Evolver was made to do, I think they could be better. I do think
the filtered sounds are decent, but there are too many delay sounds and not enough
arpeggiators or whatever I'm thinking of. You know that intro to that John Mayer song,
"Bigger than my Body" that was done with the Adrenalinn? I'm going to try and get that
sound and much more with Evolver. I know it has endless possibilities I just need to work
on it.

Aside from those, I'm always impressed with Evolver, including most of the other presets
songs/sounds.

Actually, the input has a pre-amp - my recently acquired beat to hell
70's Vantage guitar easily peaks the input. Maybe its pickups are
hot? Dunno. The guitar presets in Bank 3, #'s 20-29 sound really
good to me. But I really like the way my DOD Buzz-box sounds too,
and I'm not a guitarist, so I guess you'll have to try it yourself.

I sync the Evolver (slave) to my MPC (sequencer) so that the Evolver
runs through a sequence. Great for beat-matching any parameter in
the Evo to a song, even just simple delays. I like to sample my
guitar (or any other sound source), let's say 4 bars, let my
MPC 'play guitar' and run the signal into the Evo. This lets me
tweek the Evo instead of play guitar. I run through and edit the
sequence note-by-note. Great for getting the God Live Underwater
sound! Then I can go back an play guitar after the EVO is all
setup. Gating the Evo's sequencer with MIDI (from the MPC/recorded
MIDI or live/keyboard) is also an aural treat!
This is all great _if_ you use a sequencer!
I usually set up all four sequences, plus adding an OSC or two for
melodic content. VCA is great to sequence for a stuttery guitar
sound, from mild to ....I'll say it....wild.
I'll see if I can post an mp3 somewhere........
