Re: [Evolver] RE: sucktower !!!

I agree as well, I bought the one for the evolver and wish I had
not. Very poor quality, poor interface, and absolutely no support
for any issues that come up. I also assumed that the version that
comes with the poly would properly handle chained
evolvers/polyevolvers and it doesn't.

I complained to dave about it when I got the poly, about having to
wait for registration to go through, lack of response from
soundtower, etc. I think if we don't speak up to dave he may not
know there are real issues with soundtower and their lack of quality.

I think it's one of the few blemishes in regards to the
evolver/polyevolver. To bad there isn't a decent alternative at
this point.

What i'd like to know is who recommended this
peace of crap when i asked if we should buy it or not.
I remember at least 3 jubilatory comments telling
this forum how great this software is.
What the hell happened ?

Re: [Evolver] RE: sucktower !!!

2004-08-06 by trippler@t-online.de

I still don't have any problems with the program at all.
I use the PC versions of the mono and Poly Evolver editor. They enabled me
to program hundreds of sounds, sort banks, save them to disk and all that
necessary stuff.

Nevertheless, by reasons of solidarity among the list members I am urgently
searching for flaws and issues of the program ;-)
But I don't find something serious. Well, there might be one or another
feature that I would like to be changed, but nothing serious that
compromises my programming work in any way.

I don't know the Mac version, but, as I said, the PC version works for me.
There are some functions though that need to be learned ;-)

Regards
Stefan

I get it now, the answer is: PC users.
But i'm running Mac OSX on a
Powerbook and ALL my softwares are working fine.
I just have problems with PolyEvolver.

So is Soundtower working on an OS upgrade ?

They're making tunes and using their editor instead of posting here.
Frankly, I'm done with the whole thread. The Software works well for me.
I've said my piece before, I just don't care enough to go on about it
anymore.

Again with this.

You really think because we post a comment that takes
a minute to write we're not making music ?

Thanks for letting us know you don't care enough
and that we're wasting our time (like right now).

Uh. Just for the record - pc or mac? I demo’d the software on a mac and it was so bad I didn’t buy it. I am however using the evolver to make tunes. Just without the aid of an editor.

It seems the mac users are stuck with a piss poor product here. Or don’t you care about mac users - actually I can understand that :-)

I think you're taking it a bit personal. You were complaining about the
users who already said they liked their software. Everything is archived
and searchable. I just see no sense in repeating myself when this tool is
readily available to everyone.

It's obvious that some people are happy to use this evolver software on PC
or MAC and get it to produce great patches, and yeah, for a lot of people's
pcs or macs it does seem at least usable.. I am jealous of them, because
like I said already, I really want a *good* *usable* editor for my evolver
too.....

However with the soundtower evolver editors, there appears to be some sort
of incompatability problem, with users all over the place not being able to
get it to work.... on top of that, its very unintuitave, and requires a
proper layout that people can just sit down in front of and GET
WORKING....... basically, all complaints point to the software being badly
written.... and the company totally not caring..

There's so much more to selling a commercial program than slapping down a
few sliders on the screen, linking some code to it, and hitting the
"compile" button... the real work actually happens when you get customers
with a computer that's different to your development environment, and it
isn't behaving properly. This is where soundtower falls down. From what I
have seen, the evolver editor needs 1 or 2 good rounds of plain old
fashioned BUGFIXING.... it needs usability tweaks (the interface sucks...
just because its possible to learn how to drive a piece of counter-intuative
software, doesn't mean people should have to!) and then it would be an
actual commercial program thats worth money for someone to buy...

This is *exactly* my problem with the microwave1 editor, (which is the whole
reason I never bought the evolver editor!) and this is exactly why it
frustrates me so much - this software could be really good, if the author
just could bring himself to care and take pride in his work, and spend those
extra hours finishing his job...

Wrong. Correct is that some don't like it and that I do like it ;-)

The interface is a matter of taste but imho no reason for bashing.

That's of course a different matter. If it doesn't work you should send it
back and demand your money back.

Re: [Evolver] RE: sucktower !!!

2004-08-07 by dhamaryder

I know I've mentioned this before but I use the editor in
Unisyn(Mac users) and it works beautifully. I actually bought
Unisyn just for that reason($125). I'm working in OS9 still and it
seemed like my only option. Although it works in OSX too. The
developer said he's almost ready with an editor for Poly as well,
although I'm not sure I'm going to be getting a Poly. We'll see. I
can see what everyhbody is pissed off about, paying money for
soemthing that was supposed to be part of the deal. But if you're
a Mac user and you just want to use an editor and forget about
the deal and accept that you got ripped I'd recomend Unisyn. And
actually I've seen the Soundiver editor too and that seems to be
great as well. So just because the Soundtower one isn't good
doesn't mean there aren't other options around.

Exactly.... My point earlier wasn't insinuating that those here that had
complaints weren't making music. I was trying to say that those who don't
have any issues, aren't hanging around the forums complaining..... b/c
they're not having issues. They're off recording. Many people hit the forums
when they have problems. The issue w/ forums sometimes is you mostly hear
the complaining side. I'm not saying this is every case, but this is what
happens a lot.

If you're not happy with a purchase, try to get it resolved. If it can't
be, try to get a refund.

Take care... Happy tracking

Howdy, apologies if youve had this before but is there a free editor
for evolver desktop? All i want to do is upload and download patches
for backup etc. Can I use midiox for this and if so how? Dont really
want to spend $50 on soundtower for something i will only be using to
this level (and that doesnt make an noise!).
Any ideas let me know, cheers

Re: editors

You could try BorgLib (http://www.borgstation.com). It's free and is
great if you just want to organise patches. It doesn't seem to be
supported or updated anymore, and it only works with the Evolver desktop.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
