Faster Attack

Faster Attack

2004-10-15 by rickyannotta

Hi All!
On certain Bass sounds I find the Evo's attack a little slow to get
the punch I'm looking for. Is there a way to achieve a faster attack
by utilizing Evolvers 3rd Envelope? If so, how do I set it up? I
seem to remember someone mentioning using the 3rd envelope for this
purpose. My programming skills are still basic so any help would be
appreciated!
Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,

There won’t be a way of making them faster - but you could try using the 3rd env to add some res to the filter right at the very begining of the sound using a very quick decay to get a more defined attack phase, which will make it sound ‘punchier’. (or a tiny burst of noise, or an extra bit of one osc etc.). It will only take a small bit of something (a transient) to make it sound more defined - like the ‘click’ at the begining of a bass drum will define the sounds position in time.

Hi Rick,

The Evolvers attack is imho the fastest of all synths that I have.
I don't think that the impression of a too slow attack with several sounds
is caused by the envelope itself. If you feel that the attack phase of a
sound isn't emphasized enough you might try to change the envelope amounts
on the corresponding modulation destination.

Stefan

Maybe I used the wrong choice of words. I think I'm trying to
achieve a fat 'gated' bass attack sound. The Evo can make the
sounds, but I can't seem to get them to 'jump out' they way I want
them to. Also as far as programming skills go (or lack of), I have
good understanding of Envelopes and Modulation, just not exactly how
everything works together in practice. Not enough time spent fooling
with everything I guess. If you have more insight, please let me
know!

Thanks,
Rick

Why not do just that, gate it in. Use your sequencer or a sampler with a
faster attack/gate to gate in the evolver output.

Me too maybe ;-) I just wanted to say that there's no way to make the
Evolvers attack faster because it already is ultrafast.

For basses a little pitch modulation during the AD stage can sometimes
create additional punch.
You could also try to emphasize the attack with high envelope amount, short
decay and low sustain and then rasie the sustain again with the 3rd envelope
with longer attack, creating a kind of notch between attack and sustain
stage.
Use only one oscillator to avoid volume fluctuation from different osc
phases or sync the oscs. If you want to have a constant osc phase you should
use the digital oscs instead of the free running analogues.
You can use the 3rd envelope with zero attack and short decay to create
additional punch. Any mod destination that creates upper frequencies like
pitch, FM, RingMod, resonance, noise, or distortion can help.

btw: I don't have much insight, but always try and experiment ;-)

Stefan

Some very good suggestions there to keep me busy for a while
trippler.
Thanks,

Re: Faster Attack

2004-10-15 by pela_gius

It might be more of an issue with the way you have the decay and
sustain set rather than the attack. If you lower the D & S portions of
the envelope and bring up the overall volume to compensate you might
get a "punchier" attack.
