Poly-evolver keyboard has no mix input

Poly-evolver keyboard has no mix input

2005-02-14 by Miles Bader

I saw the picture of the Polyvolver KB's rear panel on the DSI site, and
noticed that it's missing the rack's "mix input"!

I guess maybe the thinking on DSI's part was that people would just
always use polyvolver racks for expansion, and feed the keyboard's
output into the rack's mix input -- but this is kind of a bummer for
those of us hoping to use a normal mono evolver as a single-voice
expander for the keyboard (-> 5 voice poly, just like prophet).

Any of you guys with Dave's ear care to ask him about this? Don't
forget us poor mono-evolver owners...

[Since the KB hardware seems almost a clone of the rack, I can't imagine
having a mix input would be very hard to implement, just the cost of
a pair of jacks...]

Thanks,

-Miles

well a decent ultra-small small mixer is PAIA's 8 (mono) In 1 Out
Mixer kit for $50 if you don't mind soldering it together

Also consider used stuff, I got a TOA D-3 which is 1 rack unit high 4
Stereo in 1 stereo channel out with EQ on each channel as well as
some other features for $50 used...can't beat that.... it works great

this is a bit late to this thread, but you can get a $35-$40 4 channel
passive mixer, a Rolls MX42 Stereo Mini Mixer at several locations on
the web, see http://www.rolls.com/new/mx42.html for the manufacturer
spec

What he means is this:

Look at this picture of the back of the Rack:

http://www.dsisynth.com/Keyboard/polyrear.JPG

As you can see there are 2 sets of Stereo inputs. 1 for Mix In and the
other for Audio Input. Can't remember
which is which, but one of them you can have going to all 4 voices and
the other one you can assign to a specific
voice... I think that's how it worked.

Now look at the back of the PEK:

It only has 1 Stereo in....

But still no "mix" input (like the PE rack has), right?

i'll check tomorrow - not sure if the stereo input is mixed in at the mixer
stage with the output of the 4 evolver voices or can be used as a raw
waveform a la wavestation...

i'll *try* an remember anyway!

so there is an input to mix another synths output with the main output of
the PEK, and the other (audio input) allows external sounds to be used as
raw waveforms, a la korg's wavestation a/d.

the PEK only has the 'mix' input & i agree that the additional input would
have been a worthy addition.

next time i talk to dave i'll try to remember to ask him *why* this was
left out of the PEK.
