seriously. everyone who wants to control their evolver externally using just
hardware - get a peavey PC1600 or PC1600x off ebay. The PC1600 patch set is
even available online so you don't even have to program the damn thing
yourself!

these modern controllers are great for CCs, because they are designed to
work as a part of a computer setup, with modern softsynths that have a GUI
where the knobs then SUPPLEMENT the GUI. You assign CCs using a GUI, and
then knob away... sysex isn't even part of the picture. in some cases its
tacked on as an afterthought, but usually in a very limited way, as you've
all seen.

reasons to buy a PC1600 just for your evolver:
it exists right now.
it's available right now.
it works right now.
It's made of solid bloody metal and will never break.
it's not even that expensive (compared to an evolver, and to what I paid for
my PC1600x years ago... :-)

Thanks JuJu,

Has anyone looked into using a microkorg or PhatBoy?

Er, the microkorg doesn't have any knobs to speak of (and not much keyboard)!

30 seconds of reading the phatboy website says no.

http://www.korg.co.uk/support_list/support_list.asp?productCode=pk_microkontrol
you'll have to read about the microcontrol yourself.... I bet it'll be
no too.

oh yeah - I think the kenton control freak is also likely to be able to
program the evolver... they're pretty flexible sysex-wise.... and a lot
better supported by their manufacturer than the PC1600. build quality is
a bit shabby though. kenton gear always looks a bit like a home project
to me.

I have a kenton "spin doctor" and I was able to get it to control my
evolver without a problem. It is extreemly flexable and programmable
as far as sysex is concerned. I agree it doesn't look so great but I
think the construction quality is good ... at least it is in a metal
case. I think the "control freak" is programmable in the same way so
I'm sure it would work well with the evolver too.
