Re: [Evolver] evolver "punchiness"

2005-06-18 by Brooks Mosher

I've been looking at getting an evolver for a while now. The main
selling point to me are the filters, the sequencer, and the
flexibility. However, this would also fit into my studio as kind of a
bass synth as well. I've listened to MP3's of the thing on the
internet (as well as your site too Stefan - respect to you!) but I
haven't heard any bass sounds that sound like what I'm looking for.
Can this do a thick punchy low end bass? I've also been considering
the MFB synth II.

To give you all a reference, one of my pieces in my studio is a
Jupiter 6. I love the sound of the Jupiter 6, but it doesn't quite do
the bass thing I want. I love the filter and you can get really nice
resonance type sub bass things with it. But I want something with a
little more character in the Attack and Decay of the filter envelope.

I'd love to know people's opinion on the Evolver and the type of bass
sound it can do. Can it do bass sounds like a Pro-one for example?

Thanks and respect to all on this list!

No way. You can crank the attack up to the few-millisecond range where you actually can get a "click" caused by the truncation of a single wave cycle. Pretty damn fast I would say. This beauty is a real lead monster!

I think you are confusing the thread Brooks! :) "thick" and "punchy" bass
might already be two different things (which do you want?) and I think they
are are certainly different things from a fast "punchy lead"... in general a
thick bass will need a different kind of filter and a slower envelope

IMO the evolver is not a thick, heavy sounding synth and not ideal for
wieghty bass sounds, it excells at highly defined snappy sounds which sit on
top of a mix IMO. Its egotistical and wants attention like a lead guitarist,
which can be annoying, not happy to just sit there and support the action
like a bassist :) It does bass well enough but not dark, thick sub-y sounds
that you can just sit and feel beneath the music. For bass you probably want
something that does "moog", the Alesis andromeda does this very well IMO
(but is not necessarly the best choice for a snappy, fast razzing lead
lines)
