Dudes: Want poly evolver for ambient. Suitable?

Dudes: Want poly evolver for ambient. Suitable?

2005-12-15 by hankdennemann

Dudes (and to maybe the one dudette that is out there...if any):

I want a poly evolver because I need real analog and I can't bring
myself to spend $16,000 on a Voyager (or whatever they cost).

1. Does anyone have the Voyager, and does anyone prefer its measly
1 note of polyphony to the evolver; and

2. Can the poly evolver be "toned down" to use for ambient pads,
etc. I have heard all of the demos and people love to show off the
balls out obnoxiousness of the tuned feedback, etc., but can you run
all of those oscillators into melodic streams?

3. Are you generally satisfied with the sound of the evolver?

I have an Access Virus TI (just purchased) to do all of my clean
digital sounding stuff. I am looking for something more organic for
leads, moving background pads, etc. Is the poly evolver suitable?

Appreciate the help. No music store around here carries one of
these things, so I am at your mercy.

1. Yes I have a Voyager and consider both synths to be
equals.

2. Are you kidding me? There's a tweakable
Wavestation/Prophet VS in there. You are Joking
right? :)

3. Currently no, but I'm still learning it to find the
ways and tricks I can use to make it suit my needs.
As I discover, I'll be sure to share.

Evolving sounds is what this synth is made for. Right
down to creating and importing your own waveshapes.
But I'd say that there isn't too much more you can do
with it past the Virus TI you already have.

Learn the TI then consider a Polyevolver but if you
must have one, it's a great purchase.

I've only listened to the TI in the store, but my impression is that to
some degree the Evolver covers a similar range (e.g. neither can really
do the super-moogy stuff or quite pull off the "transistor sound"), but
the Evolver seems to be a bit more organic/dirty/quirky, and without the
insane polyphony or gobs of effects.

It's a shame that the PEK isn't in more stores because I think it
ultimately comes down to whether it feels right or not, and you really
needs some hands on time to figure that out. [The mono-evolver is in
some ways a good introduction, but doesn't communicate the excellence of
the PEK's interface or the experience of using the Evolver sound
polyphonically.]

You bet! Check my "mellow" pads below ;)

Yes indeed!

In more ways than you could guess...
