[Evolver] Portable Evolver "Rig"

2006-05-26 by James Elliott

Hello Hello fellow Evolvers!
I have a question for those who like to go out with their Evolvers (Desktop or PER). I travel off and on, for work and weekend vacations) and I have been considering putting together a compact/portable rig to keep me company when I am away from my 'studio'. I was curious if anyone here has done anything similar. If so what equipment are you using - controller, gig bag, effects, and etc.
I was planning on the following:
-Desktop Evolver - naturally
-Novation Remote 25 LE (or regular Remote 25)
-Novation 25 Key Gig bag (has keyboard and laptop pouches) OR -Ogio Metriod (large laptop backpack)
-Headphones
-Maybe, Korg ER-1
-Maybe, NEXT! REZ-30 (MAM RS3)
-Maybe, Frostwave Resonator or Alienator
Let's hear it, what do you guys think?
-Jim

Re: Portable Evolver "Rig"

Well, I've put a lot of thought into my small 'live' rig for playing
house parties etc. with my hiphop/techno group::

mpc1000
evolver desktop
mackie 1202
alesis ineko
...
and hoping to add a Frostwave Resonator, as well.

This rig I can carry in one backpack plus one shoulder bag.

ps. I am also looking at those Novations! Problem is, I like the size
of the remote 25 LE, but it doesn't have aftertouch... so I can't make
up my mind.

Does anyone have review of that touchpad on the Novations... worthwhile?

cheers

I travel on business fairly often 3-4 days at a stretch and I hate
watching TV in the hotel room, (FOX News sux), so to pass the time,
I usually throw my EVO in the bag with an M-Audio UNO 1X1 MIDI
interface and a pair of headphones and then use the trusty laptop as
a sequencer, mostly w/Ableton Live. I also have a very small battery
operated headphone amp.

The fun part of the exercise is convincing the TSA crew at the
airport that the EVO is just a synthesizer and is OK to carry on a
plane

I mostly use the hotel time to explore the EVO by itself, that
onboard sequencer just takes time

When I want to do a little more I throw in an M-audio O2 controller,
they are very thin and light weight, but I usually rely on just the
laptop...my keyboard skills just don't warrant the extra weight

If I want drums well then I use Sonic Charge's Microtonic and/or
ReBirth ReWired to Ableton and route the sound of the Evo into the
laptop soundcard to be mixed in Live (yes the latency issue pops up
here but Ableton can now adjust pretty good)

Also once the Evo output is in the laptop there are a boatload of
VSTs that can twist the sound - try TobyBear's Monster Bag,
SupaTrigga, or KillerGate+ for example.

That's how I do it lightweight and on the go

Re: [Evolver] Portable Evolver "Rig"

Interesting - pretty much my same situation - I hate TV and sometimes I am confined to the hotel room (if the weather is bad, or it is just really late, etc) - what is better to kill time with than foolin around with the trusty evolver?

The reason I don't use a laptop with sequencing software is that the laptop I have to carry around belongs to work and I cannot install my own software on it (I don't want to carry 2 laptops with me where ever I go) - that is pretty much the reason I want to get a small keyboard controller.

What kind of bag do use to carry your laptop and evolver around in?

Re: [Evolver] Output Hack / desktop vs. MEK

2006-05-28 by John Gellings

I was using the desktop version of the Evolver for a
bit and liked how when I turned up the output hack...
it was just on...crackling away. However, with the
MEK, it on turns the output hack noise on when the
keys are pressed...which has its own cool effect.
However, I was wondering how to get the MEK to act
like the desktop version.

well its an xy controller... but i dont know how useful its going to be, i have barely used it as the synth engine presets didnt seem to respond to well (it just felt to small to be accurate with).. im sure its just a matter of setting the controller ranges that its modulating, if you can....

Touch pad on the novations works fine, it is more about how its
programmed. There are 4 programable zones on it so yes, you can do
some crazy stuff with it. I use it primarily for my wavestation
