Editing programs while in combo-mode

Editing programs while in combo-mode

2006-08-15 by the_last_amethyst_deceiver

Hi there evolver-people!

I would like to know if there's a way to edit individual programs
within the PER while in combo-mode. As I understand from the manual of
the PEK, this is possible on a PEK (although it seems that it is
impossible to save the edited programs this way), by selecting a part
using the 'part-buttons'. However, there are no such buttons on a PER!

I would be very happy if I could edit idividual programs in a combo by
sending sysex from my (mono) evolver. However, when I try to do this,
all parts of the combo are affected, except those parts that are set
to not receive (any) MIDI messages. Of course, setting parts to not
receive MIDI-messages, makes it impossible to play these parts from my
sequencer (logic). So editing individual programs this way does not
make much sense; I can as well go into program-mode!

Is there some way around this? E.g. a MIDI-message that selects a part
(such that sysex messages sent after this message only affect the
selected part)?

I don't find it in the manual so I'm quite pessimistic...

By the way, is this possible using one of the editors? If it is, then
there IS a way around this :-)

Thanks!

Best to you all,

Tomas.

Absolutely, it is possible with our PolyEvolver editor!
Give our free demo a try.

Well, actually, this won't be necessary: I have the full version! (It
came free with my Poly-rack!). However, I don't use it, as I quite like
Evolver's matrix interface and I try to avoid using the computer as
much as possible.

But then, if the editor can do it, so should I! :-) So, how does it
work? I assume the editor sends a sysex message to the Poly that makes
it select a specific part, so that any subsequent sysex message affects
only that part. What is this secret MIDI message? I could program my
MIDI controller to send these four 'selection-messages' (OK, I would
have to use my computer--- and Logic---as a translator, as my
controller doesn't like sysex, but still, I would be able to program
all four of the Poly's parts using my mono-evolver and four knobs of my
controller!).

I could try to find out myself, by monitoring the messages sent out by
the editor (again, in Logic---I think this should be possible, by
connecting an OUT of my MIDI interface to an IN, instead of to the IN
of the Poly), but if somebody could just tell me... ;-)

All the best,

Tomas.

Hi again tomas,
The "secret" message to select a Poly part is:

F0 01 20 01 51 PartNumber(0 to 3) F7

Thanks a lot, Derek! It works :-)

Strange this is not in the manual (well, at least, I can't find it!)...

Cheers,
Tomas.

No problem Thomas. One trick is to run the ST Editor and keep you eye on the status label at the bottom. It pretty much tells you what sysex messages are being sent/rec.
